Why Do People Take Out The A/C?

So I did some searching and I came back with little results, it just kept showing me threads where 'AC' was mentioned. So I decided to make a post, as I havn't seen one asking this question.

So, why do a lot of people take out their A/C in their FC's?

jdmsuper7 04-04-07 01:29 PM

Simplicity
airflow to radiator
space
weight reduction,
most of our ACs don't work anyway

sonorous7 04-04-07 01:30 PM

main reason = weight

Ishibubu 04-04-07 01:36 PM

So uhh how do you stay cool? Just roll the windows down? I figured it was about the weight or something else.

SpooledupRacing 04-04-07 01:42 PM

2-60 air is better for u anyways...

besides like mentioned above weight, simplicity and I'm not gonna paid to recharge or fix any broken parts in the system

Dave

blackangst 04-04-07 01:46 PM

Like most said, weight and simplicity. That said, I highly doubt the weight difference wont matter in reality. THAT said, I live in Phoenix, so no AC isnt much of an option for me lol

jackhild59 04-04-07 02:18 PM

Less weight+ lots of stickers = mucho grande horsepower and fast fast fast fast cars. :rlaugh:

And it is usually about this point in a thread that someone from Canada chimes in and says that real men don't need A/C, they just roll down the windows...

Ishibubu 04-04-07 02:22 PM

I live in Georgia, and I really can't imagine no A/C, I mean it gets reallllly hot in my car sometimes. But if most can live without A/C here than I guess it can't be bad haha.

Fumi 04-04-07 02:23 PM

i took off mine because i live in western wa.
it dosent get hot here.
sso i didn't need it.
an real men just roll the window down!
:rlaugh:
j/k

mort2002 04-04-07 02:33 PM

well a lot of people do it for the room too, FMIC, or because of clutter in the engine bay. i belive if you remove all the componets its about 35lbs too....

thats why i took mine out . all you need is 2 windows and a highway ..........

Ishibubu 04-04-07 02:53 PM

But I hear uhh wind resistance = no good...For speed and MPG.

Sooo 35 lbs or how ever much wind resistance?

Syncro 04-04-07 03:04 PM

I swapped my steel hood with an aluminum one before re-painting the car.

I saved as much weight as having removed the AC.

The Air Conditioning is the #2 priority in my car (after the engine). Florida gets hot and not having AC because you could not be arsed to fix it is GHETTO

lax-rotor 04-04-07 03:22 PM

Usually it goes as follows: Weight, MPG (using it eats gas), and usually HP suffers while it's engaged. so... depending on what you use your 7 for you might keep it you might not. personal preference i think is what it comes down to.

junito1 04-04-07 03:29 PM

GRRRR i love my a/c... i do live in florda so i dont wan tto get rid of it...

BUt my electrical problems are so bad... my a/c control panel went out.... My a/c works fine but... the a/c fan just wont turn on cause of my gay electrical problems....

ANyone in florida with rx7/electrical experience COME HELP ME!!!!!

ill pay!

pengarufoo 04-04-07 03:32 PM

+1 on weight

Those of you complaining about driving a car without AC obviously have never ridden a motorcycle in traffic on a hot day in full gear... it makes driving a car without AC seem luxurious, at least theres no radiator fan blowing hot air all over you.

AC just wastes gas as well when in use and when it's not in use it's just more crap to lug around town in your car.

I can see MPG being a factor if you owned a Prius or something but comeon....how can the fractional loss from AC be a concern in an egregious guzzler like the RX?

RRTEC 04-04-07 03:36 PM

+1 I don't even use A'C in my DD after riding my bike with full gear.

My 91 rex came with no A/C and I don't plan to install any... I guess I am hardcore.

Ishibubu 04-04-07 03:53 PM

Doesn't wind resistance hurt MPG too? I guess A/C hurts it more, or else people wouldn't use that as an excuse. I'm sure I could live with just the sunroof open, maybe bring a little spray fan with me hahaha.

Bama420 04-04-07 04:00 PM

I live in Winter Haven, Florida and I took my a/c and power steering off in the middle of springish-summer. I guess I am harder x core since I exercise my arms while sitting in my sauna.

vaughnc 04-04-07 04:22 PM

How do you defrost (dehumidfy) without A/C again?

dsmrx7 04-04-07 04:28 PM

I did it so I could mount my alternator over there (side mount alternator). Less engine bay clutter=COOL. ; )

DriftingB26RX7 04-04-07 04:32 PM

I dont know y you guys from the mid west are sayin it gets to hot when here in La it gets hot as balls in the winter haha then the summer is like AZ. I have a a/c but I never use it...it takes power, and you use more gas...I keep it in there just because, to say I have it cuz most people dont lol. I think I'm gonna be taking it out because I'm going fd intake's t/b and fmic...also I'm gonna get a fb p/s bracket to move everything down :) It has been stated.....weight, power, room for fmic, dosnt work all thoes are good reasons.

tr4c3 04-04-07 04:33 PM

I still have mine in my t2. It doesn't work in my sport, so I'll probably end up removing it, unless I install that black interior...

Longshoe 04-04-07 05:37 PM

Ive had enough of getting out of my car and looking like I stepped out of a pool. I plan on keeping A/C and run 400hp. Some people say you cant or shouldnt do it but man sitting in rush hour traffic with no a/c... screw that.

black_88 04-04-07 05:58 PM

mine stoped working when the owner before me had it. so they had the great Idea to just remove the belt and evary thing is going to be ok. im not sure if I want to remove the it.

arghx 04-04-07 06:02 PM

I still have it on my GTU but on my T2 it's gone. A/C becomes a big pain in the ass when you are building your car for serious performance, especially when it comes to cooling. It would be nice to have it but for a car that I only drive to haul ass it's not worth the trouble.

Black91n/a 04-04-07 06:16 PM

I resent the comment made about Canadians. I'll have you know it has gotten to 45 degrees C (113F) in the shade where I'm from. It reaches above 100 F every summer and is consistently above 90 most days in the summer. So yes, we get summer too up here, we don't all live in Igloos you know.

I don't have AC, I don't think the car came with it though.

Have you ever heard of humidity?! lol its like always 97% on top of 95 deg. then we'll talk about balls ass hott! but mine didnt work anyway so its gone

stylEmon 04-04-07 08:42 PM

mine came without, i bought one and put it back in.

Cars black, i put a black interior in... live in the desert..

had to modify the ac bracket to make it work with my relocated oil filter. But trust me it's worth it. I m shooting for 320 reliable horses on stock turbo. Will be upgrading to a big turbo in the near future.... and keeping the ac.

K-Tune 04-04-07 08:44 PM

florida here, dont need no stinking A/C!

djmtsu 04-04-07 09:08 PM

I have been A/C-less for 2 summers in Tennessee and it doesn't bother me a bit.

And +1 for the forearm workout in the sauna. No PS either!!

NZConvertible 04-05-07 12:53 AM

For those complaining about power loss, the A/C system comes with an amazing little device that allows you to TURN IF OFF. Amazingly, when it's off it doesn’t draw any power. Isn't that clever? What will they think of next? :)

And if you the power draw is really that much of a bother to you, you obviously need more power. Or a turbo...

NCross 04-05-07 12:54 AM

mine didnt work so i took it out.i got used to having no AC since my 240s ac was broken so i dont mind being warm now and then. if it worked i would have kept it, but after wasting $75 or so on trying to recharge/fix the 240 and it not working, i decided to keep my money this time.

As I kennewick boy, I can say that's not true.

It got over 110 more than once last summer.

Driving the '74 Beetle was pretty dang hot.

MPLSrx7 04-05-07 04:25 AM

is it true we cant get our ac's re charged because they have old coolant(i forget the real name for it), because the humidity is a killer her in the summer and i hate sweating in the car.

mightymite 04-05-07 06:35 AM

i took mine off bcs if it doesnt make it go it doesnt need to be there...less stuff to break and it makes it easy to get to everything in the engine bay

aint that the truth i guess thats y i only drive mine in the spring and fall...

Ashyukun 04-05-07 07:45 AM

You're half right, MPLSrx7. Our original systems used R12 (freon I believe) which they don't make (or at least sell to the general public) anymore, so unless you can find someone that has an old canister of it lying around, you can't recharge it with the original evaporant- and if you can, expect to pay out the ass for it. Our systems can be converted to R134, but as I understand it to do it right, you have to replace the better part of the A/C system- though you can I believe just put the adapter fittings on and recharge it without doing anything else, but its much more prone to failure. They do make some 'R-12 replacement' kits, but I have no idea how well they work.

I pulled the A/C out of mine when I swapped engines, and pulled out the P/S while I was at it. It's a 'vert though, so I don't figure I'll miss it that much- and I already do my best on my DD to not use the A/C because it kills its power & lowers the mpg.

fastrotaries 04-05-07 07:50 AM

Mine quit working, So I threw it out and saved the weight. Now I'm looking to buy new parts and put it back in. It's strange I know.
