Weird, the FSM doesn't really say if it's for the GTUs or not, the weird part is, there are about 5 different places that say it's different in everyone. In the images provided by Icemark in the stickies on the main page, it says the GTUs has a standard N/A tranny, in my owners manual it specifies a tII 5th gear, in the FSM it doesn't really say that I can find, and on various webpages with reviews of the cars it says tII as well. Anybody know for sure? I'm pretty sure it's either a .697 (n/a, IIRC) or the .719, since I've used it to verify my speed -> rpm before.

yeah i noticed that in the "sticky" as well. Thanks for you extensive research, that is awesome. Im really excited about getting this car and I cant wait to see how it drives.

In section J1 of my FSM on the specs page it has an asterick and then 0.756 and the note says with viscous LSD.Actually I believe it was originally in an older Racing Beat catalog where I found that .756 was the GTUs 5th gear before I ever had a FSM. GTUs does have standard N/A tranny just with a different 5th gear. I believe you're right that the FSM doesn't specify other than saying with viscous LSD,which I believe the only n/a that had a LSD in '89 was the GTUs.I actually haven't looked at the stickies(haven't been in the 2nd gen section in awhile) but I'll try to check them out.

SonicRaT 12-01-04 12:22 AM

Yeah, i see the FSM says a .756 for an n/a tranny, mine doesn't have an asterik or anything, but my owners manual says it's a .719, kind of strange.

andrew lohaus 12-01-04 01:32 AM

i thought n/a's had a .66 5th gear??? (rpm is right on 3k in 4th and 2k in 5th @50mph, at least on mine....)

not that it matters but it strikes me as kinda strange that the gtus got a shorter final drive and 5th gear i mean thats gotta get anoying when you are on the highway. what like 4k rpm @ 80 mph in 5th?.

can you guys with the gtus pass on the highway in 5th? cus other s5 n/a's sure as hell cant, its a downshift to 4th or even 3rd for any real increase in speed over 70mph.

SonicRaT 12-01-04 01:43 AM

Yes, my GTUs does 4k @ 80, 3k at 60, etc. And yes, I could pass in 5th.

GTUsTYLE 12-01-04 02:40 AM

As posted, the 5th gear and the 4.3 rear ( to help with the 5th gear) with a viscious limited slip are the major difference between regular n/a model and the gtus.

The other differences:
no moonroof ( some escaped with dealer installed pieces)
no a/c ( some did come with a/c from factory... mine did)
TII rims
aluminum hood ( some came out of the factory with steel pieces)
tII suspension
4pot fronts with 1 pot rear brakes ( which were in the gxl and tII)

I think thats most of them, i know there are some other differences...

Dak 12-01-04 06:57 PM

The comb of final drive and 5th makes a noticable difference.I drove a '90 vert that had roughly the same mods plus a TII intermediate housing. When I shifted into 5th at around 4k rpms it felt pretty weak compared to mine.As long as I stay above 3krpm in 5th I can drive comfortably ith out going to 4th unless I need to pass someone. On the interstate where speeds are 70 or so I very rarely downshift.
