Wheel hop on a launch, think I broke a rear diff mount

Symtoms: driving and let off throttle, tap it I can feel and hear a "Clunk".... from the rear. Not a clank, or clink, but a clunk. If I shift hard I can hear it. Sound right?

Are they a real PITA to change? Any tips? Suggestions? Where should I buy them?

ilike2eatricers 08-23-06 04:16 PM

welcome to my world... i've been putting it off for a while since it's such a PITA. should be easy if you have access to a lift

The Wankler 08-23-06 04:28 PM

LOLOLOLOL.............. damn, a lift................. Oh I wish I had that barn in the back! I guess I need to drop my rear end and take it out to make it easier? I also have a torsen LSD I could install since I would have it all out.

its not that hard i live in an apartment have a little ass garage the subframe can be removed with out removing the axles and diff it honestly took me about 1 hour to completly remove it you only need like a 9/16/ 11/16 and a 1/2 and a break bar not that bad at all

The Wankler 08-23-06 04:56 PM

ok wild, thanks for the info!

Siraniko 08-23-06 05:20 PM

How the HELL did you manage to get that out without removing anything?

wildfc3s 08-23-06 06:11 PM

just get under the car you need to drop the exhaust, control arms the the lateral links then the two big bolts on the subframe just get under there and look its not that bad

Anybody realize this guy has the first RX7 with standard (english) measure nuts and bolts? :newbie:

wildfc3s 08-23-06 06:32 PM

yep its nice

Digi7ech 08-23-06 06:59 PM

If it's not sounding like a baseball bat hitting your under carriage then there is probably a shred of rubber still holding on.

Get the Mazdatrix comp mount. Much harder to tear that one.

Then get a rear strut tower bar and good struts and springs to prevent another break.

A pinion snubber would be the ultimate answer though.

wildfc3s 08-23-06 07:32 PM

i hate metric bolts so i changed all the bolts to standard lol lol

I have good struts and springs. My ass is so stiff I can not tell I have a split rear end. Are the comp mounts any harder on the ride?

classicauto 08-23-06 08:12 PM

after replacing the front mount on the diff......two words:

Pinion
Snubber

Search it with posts by Amur......that will stop you from tearing apart any more mounts ;)

Digi7ech 08-23-06 08:32 PM

You can't feel the difference between the regular and comp mount but it's stronger so it will take more abuse to break.

samperry007 08-23-06 08:34 PM

It takes me 40 min to have the subframe out on the ground. I broke it (subframe) twice I had to weld in some thicker metal.

The Wankler 08-23-06 09:13 PM

Thanks guys.......

mekanikal 08-24-06 08:28 PM

damn it my 88t2 just started doing that today. everytime I let off the throttle I get a thump. I'm not sure what it is at the time, but I'm just wondering if I could use rear end parts of a not-turbo model since there's a couple here at the pick n pull?

The Wankler 08-24-06 08:45 PM

mine happens when you hit the thottle.

RotaryEvolution 08-24-06 09:06 PM

rear ends
pinion snubber
stiff ass
split rear
....

i think i'm in the wrong section

Amur_ 09-04-06 09:33 PM

+1 on the pinion snubber.

But wheel hop for me has always been b/c of dying shocks. I don't think it has anything to do with the state of the diff mount.

Just an extra thought. :)

Sgt. Pepper 09-04-06 09:38 PM

Shiiit. My car was fine untill I put on the Mazdatrix rear camber adjuster a few weeks back. Now it thumps every time I give it a bit of gas or decell. I think I broke the rear diff mount putting in the camber adjuster :crying:

Maybe it's just the bar itself. It has no rubber bushing like the stock bar did, it's solid so I hear everything?
