Whats a good turbo setup?

I honestly have no idea what turbo to go with, what intercooler etc so I need some suggestions. I am dropping a S4 TII engine into my '89 GXL. The car has a TII drivetrain from the flywheel back so that part is covered. I have a S4 TII bare bones block. I have the manifolds and throttle body. So If I wanted to make 400 hp at the wheels and not have a total piece of shit of a car what would be the best way to go? I am going standalone by the way.

TweakGames 10-13-07 03:42 AM

1200 posts and no clue on what's going on? How?

Anyways head to the single turbo section. That is where you need to post/research. Mainly research before post.

flamin-roids 10-13-07 03:54 AM

Never worked on a turbo before. I've always had N/A FC's and FB's. I've got about as much power as my N/A will make and I scored the engine for a really insane price. I just don't know anything about aftermarket parts when it comes to turbos.

arghx 10-13-07 04:05 AM

you have wiring issues with an s4 motor into an s5 car

flamin-roids 10-13-07 04:08 AM

Wiring issues how? If I am going to run a standalone what will I have issues with? Its just a block and manifolds. If I need to use stock parts or aftermarket why couldn't I use S5?

TehMonkay 10-13-07 05:01 AM

60-1 or 62-1 or T4 GT35R would be a good turbo, get the hks cast manifold, and at least a 38mm wastegate.

flamin-roids 10-13-07 05:08 AM

I've only seen HKS manifolds for a FD. Will they work with a TII?

RETed 10-13-07 06:07 AM

First of all, you need to tell us what your budget is...
Suggesting an HKS T04Z, which is like a couple thousand dollars, might be out of your price range...

Second, you need to tell us what you're going to do with the car?
Race?
Street?
Drag?
This implies how you want your powerband.

I would strongly suggest you REBUILD the engine.
J-Specs are a crap shot, and 400hp levels almost always require a thorough rebuild with upgraded internals.

Well said.

Where the hell did you see j-spec in my thread? Don't talk to me like an idiot. I appreciate the interest in helping me but don't act like I'm some newb trying to build a car to beat his friends mustang meanwhile not doing any work possible. I am sorry but I thought 400 rwhp and not being a piece of crap was specific enough. I don't want overkill but I want a turbo with room to grow. I also don't want an ebay $200 T04. Someone was actually helpful and gave some info on a GT35R and it seemed to suit my interest the best so far. If it makes any difference the engine is already being rebuilt and ported as we speak and I'm not worried about the budget.

(BTW I respect the hell out of you ted, I just don't like the newb treatment when I am making a decision that is not only expensive, but a serious inquiry.)

Wh1t3 C0m3t 10-14-07 03:31 AM

wow, switch to decaf buddy. i dont know if its just me but ted didnt come off as very condescending imo. he made a mistake about what engine he thought u were going w/ and it looks like u jumped down his throat for it. ted is cool as crap and very knowledgeable. sometimes he can get out of hand w/ newbs but i dont feel this was one of those times

MaczPayne 10-14-07 03:40 AM

I second the GT35R. That will be my turbo setup when I start building mine.

wackaloo13 10-14-07 04:06 AM

rebuild the block with a street port
gt35r
standalone
front mount
good fuel system
new radiator
good clutch
good exhaust
some AI if you want to really turn up the boost.

you also have the option of running a bnr stage 4. it is a hybrid turbo. it maybe able to get you what you want for less money.

good luck

Sorry for assuming it was a J-spec engine, but...

Let me reread everything so I don't get confused.

You just said "S4 TII engine".
This doesn't tell us much.
Rebuilt?
By who?
Junkyard motor?
We can't tell, cause you didn't give us enough details.

In my defense, you did ask a newb type questions.
Thus, I replied with a standard newb type answer.
If you want a better answer, how about you give us more details?
I still don't know your budget is...

Least amount of fuss for installation - big hybrid
"Cheap" full turbo options - TS04, 60-1, T04E "60"
BB-center, better spool, more money - GT35R
More expensive options - (HKS) T04Z, HKS T51R, GT40R, GT42R, GT45R
More exotic options - twin GT28R or larger

You get the picture.

If you want more details, go plug in any one of those turbo models into the Single Turbo subsection...

Thanks. I poked around the single turbo section and I saw mostly FD related info so I thought I would ask here. The engine came out of a friends car he's owned for years and its always been a really strong engine. He busted 2 seal springs when the waste gate solenoid failed to open the wastegate right after he installed racing beat exhuast. I've already pulled the motor apart and know what I'm working with. I'm rebuilding the engine myself and I'm not worried about that end.

I just want a nice turbo setup and I'm sparing no expense in building a nice engine. Looking for something without a whole lot of lag but good range in power. An "in-between" turbo if you will.

amemiya makes a good manifold of the fc

wackaloo13 10-14-07 07:21 PM

what sort of porting are you doing?

flamin-roids 10-14-07 07:25 PM

Doing a street port. I'm not doing the porting. I've got a guy who's going to do the porting. Right now I'm cleaning the engine up. I'm replacing everything, seals bearings, etc. I'm looking to spend around $2k for the turbo, manifold, waste gate and such.

It doesn't matter...
A 13B is a 13B.
The same turbo will do about the same kinda performance whether it be a 13BT or a 13B-REW.

Unfortunately that manifold requires another purchase:

Good luck with that. I thought you said you already had the manifolds?

88t2romad 10-14-07 09:56 PM

seems like you are underestimating the price of all this stuff. Quality tubular manifold is 500-1000, turbo is another 1k AT LEAST, wastegate is another 250-500, downpipe, is another 100-200. And dont forget all the water/oil lines you will be needing to go along with it.

arghx 10-14-07 10:04 PM

There was a guy on here who sold me a brand new HKS manifold (for FC) and a T04S turbo (both undivided housing) with a knockoff HKS wastegate for $900. Look around for somebody's setup. I would buy everything used except the turbo. Of course I am now messing with downpipe issue.

the HKS cast manifold (there are divided and undivided versions) is not as good as the really nice stainless ones but they are reliable. Also, J-rat dynoed 490 and ran 10s on that manifold with a street port. he also did 430rwhp with that manifold on a reman.

but if you've got the budget, go stainless

flamin-roids 10-15-07 01:43 AM

As far as the manifolds go I am talking about the intake manifolds. I already have those. I do have a stock exhaust manifold but I am not planning on using it. I didn't underestimate really. I figured the down pipe was part of the exhuast and I didn't factor it into my ideal budget. And the rest is assuming I can't find a good deal on the rest. I found a garrett (real one) GT35R for $850 already so I am off to a good start.

arghx 10-15-07 08:16 AM

so what exactly are you using with this GT35R manifold wise? I'm not clear on it, except that you said you have a stock exhaust manifold which obviously won't work. and as far as an intake manifold goes, I'm pretty sure that you will have to make your own if you want to upgrade.

Good luck with that. I thought you said you already had the manifolds?

actually the dude who lives next door, lived in osaka as a computer programer, he loves tuner cars, and he said with a few calls he can get me genuine amemiya products stright from the shop it self,

thats how i got my mirrors and my boost gauge, plug wirres are comeing soon.

i have a weakness for amemiya shit, im shure i could extend the same to a few, but hes just a neighbor, i can only ask for so many favors. its not polite:)
