welding the front diff mount
Hey everyone, i had a quick question. I have a stage 3 act clutch and i have snapped my front diff mount. Now i dont wanna waste my money and keep replacing them everytime i snap one, so i want to weld it. i dont know if i need to weld the old one or buy a new one and weld that. And i also dont know exactly what to weld to where. So any help would be greatly appreciated.

i had the same problem, my front diff mount was broken. my mechanic took it off and it was all bent up he unbent it and just welded it. he charged me $80 and no more clunk clunk.

A brand new comp diff mount is $60.
Welding it or the like will make your life hell if you ever need to pull the diff out. I don't see a good reason to do it. Dale |
i got it welded in at my shop.
its just a 5 inch steel rod from the dif to the chassy, the stock mounts are pieces of shit. |
you don't have to weld it to the chasis. You just eliminate the rubber bushings. Why does everyone (including Mazda) called them a front diff. IS there a rear diff? It all looks like one piece to me. They're a pain to replace though.

Buy a stock diff mount for cheap. Then weld the top and bottom half together with a small 1/4" or so plate. This eleminates the bushing altogether so bushing stiffness does not matter. Installment is no harder than the original part. If you have to replace it because of another failure, not likely, you or whoever welded it should not be welding. This will transmit more "noise" vibrations through the car.

You "hard mount" that front bushing and you risk cracking the diff housing itself...

is welding the mount a dragracing type application or would it be suitible for road racing too my subframe is out and im curious |

So this is the answer I came up with. I do all kinds of driving, 300 miles a week highway commute, daily driving, drag racing, auto-x, road racing, this works for all of it. There is no vibration or any silly side effects that everyone claims. Yes, you might rip the bolts out of the diff casing, but it's doubtful, I also have the "pinon snubber" mod (search for it you'll see what I mean) which takes a lot of the stress off the mounts as well. Power transfer is instant and insane. I can get large strip of rubber at 100+mph on the 3-4 shift. If there's interest I can see if we can get a batch made, PM me for details. |
Also you can search for pinion snubber.
If you get a competition rubber mount and this snubber you shoudl be set for a long time. It's pretty much a bump stop above it so it can't go flying up which will reduce the stress of the rubber mount. |
