welding fan clutch?

has anyone tried to weld a fan clutch closed so it won't spin freely?

J-Rat 04-16-04 07:41 PM

Why in the world would you want to do that?

Akabane 04-16-04 07:44 PM

because mine is slipping and 200 dollars cost a little too much for me right now, would anyone know if this is a bad idea?

skunks 04-16-04 07:46 PM

i would just get a eletrical fan

uhvnutn 04-16-04 07:47 PM

Bad idea dont do it.

Akabane 04-16-04 07:49 PM

what could happen from doing this? also isn't buying electrical fans more than a clutch? cuz i would have to rebuild the alternator and do some rewiring as well

J-Rat 04-16-04 07:52 PM

Dude, somebody has to have an extra clutch laying around.. Hell, I might have one.

Akabane 04-16-04 08:00 PM

i bought 2 of em and they were both slippin they felt hard at first but then they just slip so bad u can stop the fan with a pen

J-Rat 04-16-04 08:04 PM

Yeah, been there done that. I probably have one (or 4 laying around that I KNOW are good). You can have one of them for the price of shipping.

skunks 04-16-04 08:13 PM

how m uch do these run j-rat?

J-Rat 04-16-04 08:17 PM

Does what run? The fans?

Scott 89t2 04-16-04 08:18 PM

it'll be fine as long as you never go past 3000rpm.......

Akabane 04-16-04 08:26 PM

so if ur fan goes over 3rpm the fan will blow too hard?

igottafc 04-16-04 08:28 PM

ummm yea. Think about what would happen to the fan if you revved it to 7-8k?? im pretty sure ur fan will blow up :)

Akabane 04-16-04 09:22 PM

does anyone have an electric fan installed on their fc ro give me some feedback about it?

totallimmortal 04-16-04 09:28 PM

you can get an elctric fan cheap off another car in a junkyard, or look for the fan clutch, post in the for sale/wanted

You can get a new Perma-cool 16inch"finger chopper" fan from jegs for 90 dollars.I used an adjustable thermostat switch from Advance auto to switch it on and off based on coolant temp. You also need a relay and wire.Total cost was probably 110 to120 dollars. It's cheaper than a new clutch fan and cleans up the engine bay making the car easier to work on.

I've had mine on about two years with no problems. It only runs when needed not all the time if you install it like I did.

Sam 04-17-04 01:26 AM

i have a good fan with clutch that I can sell you for a fair price (30 shipped). dont weld it, if you do whenever you redline the car think of how fast the fan is spinning

( shattered plastic everywhere)

They run for FREE. Get this one! Now!:D

Kenteth 04-18-04 12:57 AM

find one on ebay for cheap... and you DO know that the clutch fan is supposed to slip some right?

EDIT: I would have sold you mine, but I just replaced an e-fan I had installed with it. I personaly like the clutch fan better (at least when it works)

skunks 04-18-04 01:22 AM

i would buy one from Sam, its only 30 bucks for one from him

GlitchFC 04-18-04 01:43 AM

well, i just installed an E- fan off of an old escort at the junkyard (10 bucks big woop) onto my buddies FC, and he says (with it wired on the "high" setting) that he gets about a 1/4 lower temps on his stock temp guage. easy, simple, and 10 bucks.

sounds like he had either a faulting stock cooling system, or hes running the placebo affect...

youve never heard of gains like that? or are you jealous? ;)
