Weird smell after new exhaust.
Hey all,
I just got my car back tonight after having a dynomax catback installed. I started it up and after about 5 or so minutes i started to smell a weird "burning metal with a hint of banana-ish" smell. Anyone know wat i'm talking about? Anyway, is this just the new metal from the exhaust or is my cat clogged? I revved it up and noticed that the rpms took longer to rise and fall, but the cat wasn't glowing red hot after i shut it down, and the pressure from the tail pipes were pretty damn strong. I've never gotten a "new" exhaust before...so this is all news to me. Thanks! |

I doubt it has to do with the newness of the exhaust, as my '90 GXL (All stock with ~36k on rebuild) has produced this smell once or twice. Very banana-ish.

Im sorry for being stupid but im not really understanding what u wrote there... edit: Actually i understand wat u said now....but i dont think its normal for my car to have a burning metal smell to it. I doubt thats normal at all. |
I don't think I would call it banana-ish...
but when you get a new exhaust, it is normal to have a funny smell, kinda like melting plastic. That would be the new gaskets melting into place. It will go away after a little bit... |
It will go away, after me and my friend put our new headers on, it smelled so weird the whole day. ITs gone now. Dont worry about it.

new exhausts smell for a good while. make sure nothing is touching just be be sure. if all clear, it will go away in a day or two
|
I've noticed more of a sulphur smell after all my new exhausts.
|
Oh ok good. I thought my car was on fire or something.

I work in an exhaust shop and more than likely the pipe that was used is an aluminized pipe. It has a sort of oily coating on it which will burn off rather quickly. Smells bad but normal.
|
Ya actually it is aluminized piping. The smell i think is starting to go...and it does kinda smell like banana....but whatever. Haha
