Water pump help!
OK my water pump went and I need to know what to buy.. its a jdm t2 with a 20 b front shell does this affect what water pump to buy!?
|
normally, one replaces the waterpump when one dies.
|
Lol smart ass.
I think he wants to know if he can use any, let's say 13B water pump, turbo or non, JDM or not, S4 or S5 to replace his. Don't know for sure, so I'll be quiet now. |
By front shell do you mean the front-most iron or the front cover (houses the front counterweight and oil pump chain). I'm assuming you're using a 13b front iron, so depending on if you're s4 or s5 will determine what pump to use. I'm not 100% sure that they are different between the s4/5, but visually they look the same. I would just order the same-year part for it.
|
please define "20B front shell"
a JDM S5 T2 uses the same water pump as any other S5 the Cosmo engines use a totally different pump, it is only available thru Mazda, and its very very expensive. |
OP probably means it's a 20B front cover. Late in S5T2 production, Mazda replaced the N370 front cover with a NF01 one from the Cosmo. Can't recall the exact date, but I believe it was in mid-1991. Part number prefix is stamped into it, visible from the outside when installed on the shortblock.
Water pump is determined by the water pump housing. Any 86+ WP housing can go on any 86+ front cover without doing anything weird. On my 20B FC, I'm using the NF01 front cover and a N326 (S4NA) water pump housing and pump. The only thing I did was cut and weld both hose barb necks to clear the turbo outlet pipe and OMP. Other than that, it bolted on with no drama. Can't recall which gasket I used between pump housing and block, but they may be the same part. Check with Atkins Rotary or Mazdatrix to be certain. |
gasket n326-15-162.between keg and housing.
|
Yes the housing is stamped 20b ... does it affect what water pump to buy? And its a 89 vert tII jdm swap
|
Really not sure what year the motor is ....or how to tell
|
did you completely ignore everything posted? the water pump you buy is dependent on the water pump housing.

Someone probably just used a 20B rotor housing on the rebuild. I've done it, just need to swap the exhaust port insert.
It's likely that your engine uses a normal water pump for its application, post a picture. |
Where to buy a waterpump?
I have a 1991 NA RX7 and I'm wondering where to buy a new water pump. MazdaTrix, Atkins? Should I return the pump that I ordered from Autozone and order one from the stealership? What is my best bet? I don't mind spending a little extra if it's going to be a better part. O'Reillys and Autozone have a lifetime warranty on theres... Thanks!!

Help to keep a Rotary on the road, anyone?

I tried creating a new thread to post my above question about what company I should go through and why. I even posted it in the new member technical section just in case members would consider this a stupid question, BUT the thread was never approved. Parts quality should be an important thing, correct? Due to no response on this thread, and the disapproval for the attempted thread, I returned both waterpumps. As a result, my '91 S5 has been sitting disabled for the last 2.5 months, and I still have no response. I have since bought a dilapidated '91 Nissan 240SX just so that I can have transportation. If anyone has any love for Rotary Engines, could you please show it by giving me some feedback on this topic? Who should I buy an S5 Non-Turbo Waterpump from and for what reasons? Who should I avoid? Thank you! |
Chain store water pumps are fine. No need to pay extra to get an OEM one through a specialty seller. Just be sure they specify that it's either an 86-88 or an 89-91 specific part. They are not interchangeable.
|
the root of the problem is that Mazda supplies a rebuilt pump now, so you cannot buy an OEM pump in the US.
furthermore Mazda sells the same rebuilt pump as a bunch of the chain stores, i think its a cardone, Mazda is $70, the chains are usually cheaper. i see new pumps from gates, which is scary, bosch, which is worse, airtex which is not as good as your bad OE pump, and airtex, which is a mystery. there is also beck arnley, and since they mostly rebox stuff, it might be good, or it might be a turd. i see an NPW which at least is japanese… so you have plenty of choices, none of them that great. |

I ordered both water pumps from O'Reillys and Autozone, and had both pumps sitting in front of me for a few weeks. The O'Reillys gasket was broken due to a lack of packaging material inside the huge box it was shipped in. The Autozone waterpump came with a good gasket, but they couldn't even get me a thermostat gasket. Each pump was about $70, about half the price of Mazdatrix @ $136.26, and Atkins @ $135.

Remanufactured water pump.Anybody used one? - RX7Club.com So I got about four years out of it and since I don't drive it as much now that I have a truck I'm guesstimating about 40k to 50K miles out of it... So in short the reman didn't even last half as long as the stock one. Others may have better luck. If you buy a parts store reman make sure it comes with a lifetime warranty. I paid 79.99 at Autozone (Duralast:"New" Limited Lifetime, and who knows who made it because Duralast is all reboxed stuff as well). They also have a Valucraft Remanufactured for 59.99w/1yr warranty. O'Reillys has a 66.99 Masterpro(says Cardone in description)Remanufacured/1 yr. warranty & the 76.99(Import Direct New w/ broken gasket lol, limited lifetime.) Napa has a new Napa Tru-Flow for 72.00 and a reman Napa for 69 that actually has a limited lifetime warranty on it.

Just a suggestion though, paint it before installing it, mine looks absolutely horrible after less than a year with exterior rust.
So I probably shouldn't purchase one from MazdaTrixFan Clutches, Water Pumps, Thermostats, Belts, Pulleys or Atkins Rotary86-92 Rx7 Water Pumps? Both Atkins Rotary and MazdaTrix do not specify whether the water pumps are new or remanufactured, and do not list any warranty info or part supplier info? Thanks j9fd3s, Dak, and RXSpeed16 for your swift responses! |

I'd pick one with a lifetime warranty maybe the NAPA reman. At least it most likely started life as a Mazda pump. Only if Mazdatrix or Atkins will give a lifetime warranty would I consider them. Otherwise you'd be just as well off with one from the local guys and a warranty.

I want to get a new pump and not a remanufactured one. From what I've read it might be smart to stay away from rebuilt pumps due to their short lifespan of about 4-5 years? If I bought a good quality new one, wouldn't that be better than a rebuilt Mazda pump? Even if both have a lifetime warranty, I don't want it going out in a couple of years and having to do the job again. Anyways, Napa is out of the picture

the atkins looks like the NPW pump. the picture for the Mazdatrix is the Mazda reman pump, although for 2x Mazdas retail price they should be selling you something else…

The way you say that makes me think that there is the slight possibility that it could have started life as a new bosch as well;) I think I should go with a new pump? So I called Napa about their Tru-Flow new pumps...
I was going to go with the Napa Tru-Flow NEW water pump, but I just called Napa to order it, and it's made by Gates! . As long as the impeller is identical to Mazda's I would think there shouldn't be any issues with cooling. The passages are in the wp housing. I figure with any of these new or remans it is lifespan due to quality of the bearings and seals but mainly the seal as that seems to be the main failure mode. Seal fails and it starts leaking. You could be a guinea pig and buy the NAPA/Gates(though the Gates is $58 on rockauto.com) and report back when it fails as I did on my reman. |

$$, Mazda Japan still sells new pumps, but Mazda USA supplies a reman
I also called Razzari Mazda in Merced. They first said that the Water pump was "New", but when I questioned that, he double checked and confirmed that they were reman'd and cost 67.70. They also said that there were no "New" pumps left, and the Mazda Pump w/ Manifold was available for $376.00. I think that one of the dealerships was confused(probably Razzari, because at first he said that I had a 12A engine). Regardless, I figured I would just reconfirm that Mazda USA doesn't have New pumps, just remanufactured. Do you know how much a New Mazda Water Pump from Japan would cost?

Possibly. If the original pump had been replaced with a bosch and then that one was turned in as a core. I figure most likely it would be Mazda.

Maybe I should just buy the reman from Mazda for 67.70 if it has a lifetime warranty(I forgot to get the warranty info, sorry. I will call again tomorrow and post that info here). If the Mazda reman does not have a lifetime warranty, I am going with the Gates pump. I called Autozone and they revealed that their New "re-boxed" Duralast Waterpump is made by Torque-Flow...Probably gonna stay away from that one. Just to recap on the parts stores NEW waterpump brands(all have Lifetime warranties): O'reillys new pump is Import Direct. Autozone Duralast is Torque-Flow Napa's new pump is Gates Tru-Flow |
