WARNING!!!...to those with gutted cats...
Last autumn I gutted my cats on my stock exhaust. Yeah, yeah, I know, I know. But I had a good reason. Prior to this I was boosting, at best, 2psi with my mostly stock '89T2. Since then I've been getting the usual flamage and popping. Well, at least until tonight. I've had pops that have been loud, but nothing like this. It felt as though the back of my car had lifted off of the ground. After this my exhaust was louder. Once I got home I was able to see what had happened. The driverside muffler canister had EXPLODED! Not just a little split, but completely wide open. Like a flower bloom out the side of it. Needless to say this is the impetus for me to finally suck it up and get a cat-back. I was about to get one in a few weeks anyway. Bahhh! I've been looking for one that would bolt right up to my RS*R 3" frontpipe. Most ones I've seen start out at less than 3" then flares out to more. I need one that is at least or larger than 3" from tip to end. Oh well, it's time to make my decision.
Let this be a warning to all of you out there with the gutted stock setup. Those flames and pops catch up to you eventually. The stock canisters don't like that too much. ;) jerk_racer@hotmail.com |
no bought cat back will be 3" at the flange as they are made to bolt to the stock cat. and if your down pipe bolts to the stock cat then it's not 3" at the flange either anyways....
corksport just came out with a new one, very cheap!! full SS. http://www.corksport.com/rx7/2rxeng.html |
That corksport exhaust looks nice :bigthumb: I wonder how it sounds and performs.
|
I gotta see this, where are the pics?!:D
|
I wish mine would shoot some freaking flames.
I have lots of pops 'n shit. but no flames. my pre cats are gutted and I have a race pipe main cat. a straight pipe. then to my stock mufflers. Any tips on quick flames. I almost put some spark plugs into the mufflers but decided not to. Late Matt22 |
OK, OK. I'll work on getting pics. :D
|
That is an amazing price on that catback...I think I know what I'm getting once I get some money (and a job!)

So this is a single exhaust setup? what are the good and bad points about a single vs. Vpipe dual?
what does the single sound like? |
Damn thats nice. I was thinkin about the apex dual N-1s but it looks very heavy and is kinda pricy. plus Im pretty sure if the y pipe on the apex is 2 1/2" at the front. That cork sport system looks very nice!
|
The same thing happened to my 1st gen. My leading plug wire slipped off the coil one cold morning. My friend and I were just cruising along,,,,then...,,CAABOOOM. Sounded like a cannon. Blew my muffler wide open!!!
Flames are natural for a rotary.. Open exhaust, straight through muffler(s), walaa flames |
I wonder if that Corksport catback is 3" in diameter?? Anyboyd has a clue? I already have a 3" exhaust system from the RB downpipe all the way to the back.. But if the corksport is 3", then I just might get myself one.. Hey, for that price, why not?.. Right??
|
Single works like a charm. 3 inch all the way. =)
no bought cat back will be 3" at the flange http://www.calinetworks.net/rez/exha...s/IMGA0099.jpg |
You guys want to hear it? I made a super cheezy ass video a while back.
here is a link for the old 2 1/2 inch HKS one VS the 3 inch Apexi N1. http://www.calinetworks.net/rez/movies/rezRX7T2.mpg Right click and "save as....." smart people! |
Corksport is 3 all the way back than goes down to 2.5, I am extremelly interested in it though it does go out the driver side and I was wondering how this would effect weight ratio? And is the Apexi N1 Single that heavy?
|
I am running straight 2.5 " single NO MUFFLER,cats,etc
I love it,flames BOOM I can see the light from it in rear view mirror at night. I havent caught any static from local fuzz (not yet) anyway |
I ordered the Corksport exhaust late Tuesday afternoon and it came in on Thursday. Wowzers!!! I'll be putting it on tomorrow. $303 shipped to my door. This thing looks friggin' awesome.
I have pics of the exploded muffler, but I need to have them hosted to post them I guess. jerk_racer@hotmail.com |
I wish Corksport was that fast shipping my stuff!!!
I spent over $1,000 there and I am still waiting to get my stuff. Type 2 Front Bumper 4 KVR Xdrilled rotors a set of Hawk HP+ pads SS braided lines It's been over 2 weeks now. . . . Hmm... |
think that's bad rez I ordered some stuff from them over 2 1/2 months ago and still hasn't been shipped.
|
What the hell did you order?
I think 3-4 weeks is pushing it. ... |
Ok the n-1 Duals are BadA$$
they sounds really good not too loud like those little hondas .with the silencers that is ....Sweet
|
is that single corksport exhaust really just $289?????
thats a bad ass looking piece. almost like the n1..but without the pre muffler. i want that thing. thats pretty weird that your canister exploded like that. must have looked crazy for anyone driving behind you. i throw massive flames out the back of my turbo2. my mufflers are made by sebring, they are straight threw stainless cans. they sound awsome. i have a 3 inch Y pipe, gutted cat, and a 3 inch mindtrain exhaust. gets alittle anoying on the highway though...i have to really pump my stereo to even hear it clear. i need to get some kind of sound proofing or something to shut up the mufflers inside the car. mike 87 t2 |
how is the flow compair to apexi GT Spec?
|
Hey guys...This exhaust you guys keep talking about is it pretty nice looking...I have straight pipe all the way from the manifold to the Apex-i Dunk Series Muffler and I am not to impressed with the sound...It really sounds kinda wimpy...Kinda sounds like a turbo whine...It shoots a 3 foot flame out of the back of it at night sometimes...During decelaration...I was wondering if that Corksport is a really nice unit or not...Post again and let me know...I might purchase one...
|
Hello hello my people. For about $500 I have an almost 3" straight through exhaust on my car. Well, except for the 2.5" section for the first two inches of the Corksport exhaust. I can live with that. The canister has a 3" passage that is perforated (not louvered). If you live in an area patrolled by the noise gestapo (like SoCal), don't get this exhaust. It's as loud as it is pretty. 3" piping with a 4" tip. Doesn't look too big compared to the rest of the unit. Anyway, it's loud, loud, loud. I don't mind this, but some sissies might. But they can ride home on their girl bicycles, you know. :D This exhaust is crazy. It'll piss off neighbors in other neighborhoods. :p: I like it. My car runs like a raped ape now. Excellent. It comes out of the driver side with a slight angle. Very attractive indeed.

im just wondering if its louder than an N1 with a straight thru from header/downpipe to tip. i was running that for a while, and it was pretty loud. im assumeing this is most likely the same noise.

It sets off car alarms in parking garages. How's that for loud? If I did get a mp3 of the sound, that would only describe the general sound of it. To understand how loud it is it has to be heard in person.
jerk_racer@hotmail.com |
get an mp3 anyway, I'll listen.
|
Jerk, come on man get an mp3 please. I really want to sound how loud it is. Is it a deep sound or a whine sound? and when you foot isn't on the accelerator does it sound that bad? Also I had a friend with a Lan Evo that blew his muffler from the missfiring system. Funny as hell. He got pulled over 10 times in 20 minutes heading home since he just removed his mufflers.

One of these canisters is not like the other, one these canisters is not the same...
|
I'm ready for my close up...
https://www.rx7club.com/forum/attach...&postid=524032 If it wasn't a straight through design to start with, it sure was after. |
Yo,
BAM! There it is. Thanks for the pics! KS 1989 GTUs "BAM!" |
wheres the mp3??? come on

WAtch out man. your gas tank is right next to your little mishaps.
|
ReZ311: Gee, thanks for the heads up. :p: Thankfully the gas tank was saved by the heat shield.
No mp3's, sorry. I don't have the means to get some made. :( jerk_racer@hotmail.com |
