Upgrade for Leading ignition coil?
 

There's several ways to fit an FC ignition coil into a first gen. One is to use the stock distributor and a transistor or another type of ignition module to trigger the stock FC ignitor. The other is MegaSquirt with ignition control...

Now, I figure if one is shopping for parts, why not get better aftermarket ones rather than scrounging the junkyard for 14-19 year old crap.

All searches came up negative. I couldnt find any dual output coils that aren't one of those GM style coils. I also couldn't find anyone using anythign other than a stock coil...

Is anyone here using an aftermarket leading ignition coil?

reason why is because the stock coils are supposedly very good from what they say on this site. Some people use the msd coils as a replacement and I guess some what of an upgrade but when I tried to do this it ran rather shity but one of the coils may have been bad. I put the stock coils back in and the car ran great.

The best thing I could think to do would be using twin Bosch coils or just the factory FC coils... The stockers have plenty of spark for even highly modified engines... :)

But yes, I know they have plenty of spark based on the sparks I've seen them throw, in some pretty crazy conditions.

However, they ARE older coils, and coils do go bad.

I wish it was as easy as running two single post coils in parallell or series :p

why can't that be done?

Not running yet, but I´ll be using Bosch coils...

Running the coils in series or parellel halves or doubles resistance, according to what I've read. Not good :p

Parellel halves the resistance.

Series doubles the resistance.

Parallel might work if the DRIVER could handle it

Series, there COULD be a lag.

That is correct. It is one of the first things you learn in electronics courses. It also affects the current - double resistance means half current, etc.

I'm gonna bump it, just to see if anyone else might have an aftermarket coil.

I really think it comes down to the fact that the stock coils, with a MSD or Crane unit boosting them, can fire off a 500+ WHP FC reliably. What more do you want?

i heard that the FC coils are better then even the FD ones. IF that is true the there is no reason to waste time and money on a msd, i would say just clean up stockers

Hey, I wouldnt say time and money was wasted on a Multi Spark Dischage unit. I've got the Crane Cames Hi-6 on my leading coils and I have a NOTICABLE improvement in high RPM.

well the way i would do it would be to convert to FC coils and spend the money on other mods ... then if your still unhappy with them change to a aftermarket system ... unless your planning on going to high hp levels i dont think the need for msd or crane is really there...

The need for a Multi Spark Discharge unit isnt there?

On my (slightly :)) modified Convertable, without the Crane Cams Hi-6 unit, the revs between 7K and 8K are much slower, and going over 8K into 9K is just pointless because without the crane, the power curve barely reaches 9K

It makes a small, yet noticable difference in all other RPMs, and a few other people I've spoken or read from to are claiming economy increases as much as 2MPG.
