Unorthodox Crank Pulley 7-12 HP gain?!
So Unorthodox has the pulley for sale right now for $50.00 so I'm going to pick one up. I just wanted to see if anyone else believes their claim that it can add 7-12HP. This is NOT the underdrive one.
http://www.unorthodoxracing.com/Item...e=12&Model=131 |
I don't understand how it could make more power if it was not underdrive. Even if it was a fraction of the rotating mass of the stock pulley, it wouldn't make 7-12 HP.
|
Whoever made the webpage must have copied the same spec table from the underdrive pulley onto this one... that also says 7-12 hp increase
no hp increase on this one, just a dent... I wonder if they have more than 1 for sale |
i have the pulley on my klze mx3 , it actually made a noticeable differance . it was a few lbs lighter than the stock. me and my buddy were racing with his h22 civic and we'd be dead even with the stock pulley, went home threw on the unorthodox and i would jump ahead off the line everytime, my buddy was all mad i put it on
|
yeah brah me and my homies were racing our honda's and we were dead even from stop light to stop light and then he pulled over and got a cheese burger and i chose not to eat, and he was so madd cuz i beat him everytime off the line after that.
|
do they even have paved roads in alabama?
|
nope, this is were Dr1fting started. Except we don't call it that. it's called.. haulin' ass.

Even underdrive pulleys don't increase power that much. And they suck on the street.
|
is that a single piece pulley that requires the removal of the front eshaft bolt?

Wildly unlikely. Maybe if it was also underdrive, and used on a 12,000 rpm PP race motor.

you better ask them if it has marks at -5 L and - 20 T just like stock

if anything, nice little $50 bling bling piece for your engine bay, esp if you got an efan setup to show it off.
|
Take your $50 and go get some stock pulleys powder coated.

This is the response I got to the email:
"The pulley in the title is an underdrive pulley, the one at the end designates black anodize which we no longer do anymore. The unit on the site is the only one of its kind left. It replaces the entire pulley and hub assembly, this requires strict installation measures outlined in the pulley instructions to not have the thrust washer drop out." Well... I guess I'm not buying it after all  In case anyone is interested in that thing he also happened to mention that the regular price could be brought down to $200 each with a group buy of 40 people... Take your $50 and go get some stock pulleys powder coated. Can you get that steel heat treated or something to turn it that wierd chameleon colour or something? I don't know much about metal processing; just that steel won't annodize do a cool looking colour like aluminum |
^ Powder coat is a type of nice paint. Paint weighs almost nothing. I think you can get metallic-looking colors too, but I dunno how good they look.

|
What about underdriven pully + fd alt for street driven??
In my own experience (I am currently running the unorthodox underdriven main crank pully) w/ fd alt. I see, 13.Xvolts @ idle and on light throttle (or full throttle), I see 14.Xvolts. |
see, this is where the term underdrive pully makes no sense. if you follow simple gear theory, if you have a pully that is smaller than stock, wouldent you technically overdrive the part? underdrive would be if you increased the size of the stock pully.
so, i really fail to see how reducing the size of the pully would create an underdrive state. Lloyd |
I think they are larger but I'm not sure because I've never seen an underdrive pulley in person. I'll let someone else confirm that.
|
I "think" the underdrive main crank pulley is suppose to be smaller, so the ratio of between the main pulley and alt/waterpump pullies will be greater.
Again, this is just what I am guessing. |
the intention of the underdrive pulley is to slow down the other components though. Not to speed it up.
|
might be ok if you do the ford tempo alternator swap since it has a higher amperage output and given that car runs at a lower rpm?
I dont know about the waterpump and temps though |
At the end of the day, its a waste of money on a street if your goals are performance oriented. If you just want a "bling piece" thats fine too, just realize what your're spending money on.
Generally speaking, making functional changes to support asthetic modifications is a fool's errand. However I will concede that, the stock alt sucks, and this is as good a reason as any to replace it. |
what sort of affect would it have on the waterpump? I know everyone that sells the pulley says "decrease the chance of cavitation in the coolant" or something along those lines, but would it still pump enough coolant through the engine to cool it efficiently?
