u-joint replacement

so i've got a clunk when dis/engaging the clutch, and my buddy says that my u-joints need to be replaced. he called up carquest (the only place he could find that had them) and they have some for $27.50 a piece.

he told me to ask you guys if the fact that they had "staked" end caps meant anything. he said that he'd replaced lots of rx7 u-joints before, but he didn't think they had these staked end caps. honestly, i don't konw what staked end caps means

also, do you guys have part #'s for diff mounts? (im sure the front has a dif # than the rears, but do the rears have the same #'s or are they individual?)

I think all the factory u-joints are staked. You can grind the staking away with a Dremmel tool (I've been told that some people don't grind out the staking, but just press the joints right past it).

The part number for the front differential mount is FC01-28-890, and the two rear mounts are both FB01-28-890. There are probably cheaper sources, but the best price I found for the front mount was about $75 at Racing Beat for the competition mount. I'm not sure if they carry the rear mounts.

Don't forget to re-"stake" it when you put the new ones in. That could be nasty.

The new joints will use circlips that secure the joint against the inside of the yoke ears.
