turbo problems have some questions help please

alright so heres the deal im hoping i dont have to replace my turbo i dont think i can afford that but my car seems to lack in power quite a bit infact. and i my boost guage only goes up about half way. i think it would be about 25 x10mmHg and i checked my presure comming out of my intercooler as i was told to do and it was low very low. and then i was checking for leaks cause i dont have the time to take everything apart to get to the turbo i noticed that next to my pressure sensor is my variable resistor and it looks blown to crap. but im not shure of what its controlling i dont know what it does exactly i know what a variable resistor does i just dont know what this particular one does for the car. its right next to the pressure sensor any help, advice, experence, anything would be greatly apreciated. thank you.

Check the secondary throttle dash pot & cam.
It's supposed to slow down the rate the secondaries open.
Mine was stuck so the TB only could open part way.
I just removed the dash pot & cam.

i dont mean to be a noob here but what exactly is the dash pot and cam tell me that and ill check it and get back to you. im sorry for my ignorance ive been learning as i go.

Here is a write up about the dashpot readjustment by another forum member. It explains its function and how to check if it's working correctly.

What are your mods?

If you have a clogged cat it could be causing the loss of power.

Truxaw2 12-30-03 12:49 AM

so far im running pretty much stock the only parts that are realy new are just simple stuff the car had only been drivin by one other owner and had hardly any miles on it when i baught it but that ment it had been sitting and so i had to replace most of the exaust and some other small minor parts. turbo is good just lacking in power i got my cat redone when i baught hte car it was one of hte first i noticed had rusted through.

ilike2eatricers 12-30-03 12:56 AM

Did you get a cat that was specifically made for rx7s? If you didnt there is a good chance that it could have already burned out.

Truxaw2 12-30-03 01:00 AM

are you talking about the catalitic converter just making shure were on hte same page thats all like i said before noob.

Sorry about the confusion.
There are 2 dashpots on the turbo TB.
The one above is on the upper primay throttle shaft.
It just lets the throttle close easy.

The one I'm suggesting is on the lower secondary throttle- under the TPS assembly. There is a vacuum diaphragm hold-off and a slow opening control cam & dashpot on it.
It may be stuck shut like mine was.

SureShot 12-30-03 08:35 AM

This picture shows how easy it is to overlook the secondary throttle.
It's completely buried under the TPS.

To wire it open, I had to pull the alternator, to pull the TPS, to get in there.
I removed the lower dashpot, linkage, cam, & hold-off assembly.

im going to try to do that however im not shure what exactly you want me to do i would greatly apreciate extended directions on what to do it would help just so that i dont move or take anything off that i shouldnt. thanks for your help im on my way to the mazda dealership to get a new variable resistor well see if htat does anything first i would be so pissed if it was something that simple anyway ill keep checking and keep you posted oh and check out my other post last night on 2 gen paige about what happend to my car whilie i was working on it im still trying to fix that problem aswell now. noobs what are you giong to do with us oh well its somehting to do i guess.

Truxaw2 12-30-03 03:13 PM

i dont think its opening all the way but before i take anything of i would like to have a better understanding of what pieces i need to take off i see what you said but i just want to be sure of what im doing how do i "wire it open" thanks

SureShot 12-30-03 03:31 PM

You can just see it under the TPS stuff.
Manually open the primary throttle & see if the double secondary opens.
You will probably have to push back the cold engine hold-off diaphragm.

I wish the FSM had a better illustration, but you can find it in the manuals link in my sig below.
It's in the "Fuel & emmissions" section
