Turbo overheat cause 'ticking' noise?

I made a 2,147 miles journey. The last 900 or so miles was up and down steep mountains. I had never driven this terrain, and didn't know that I should have been down-shifting. My car started to make a sort of "ticking" noise about 250 miles from my destination. I took off the TID, and made sure it wasn't the compressor wheel. It definitely sounded as though it were coming from the turbo. Is it possibly the exhaust wheel? Perhaps I overheatedit or warped it from the super hot exhaust temps?? Wouldn't the rear turbine affect the front, though?

Going up mountains in 5th gear...low RPM and high load(boost), sounds very plausible to me.

Yeah... "haha"... I've just never driven this type of terrain. I feel that I really may have fucked my car up. :-/ Going to check the plugs today.
