Turbo NA or TII (searched)
Two FC's, one TII with a f*cked up body and one NA, would it be faster/wiser/cheaper to turbocharge the NA using the TII parts, or put the TII motor into the NA?

Easier to drop the turbo motor into the NA car than slapping the turbo on the NA engine I think.
You couldn't have search much for this cause its been covered countless times. |
NOPE! it would be i belive, more expensice to buy a n/a and make it turbo then to just buy a turbo II. pluse a turbo II engine componets are deffrint then a n/a

If you have to ask, drop the TII engine in the NA car. :)

Ah Aaron Cake, i just started reading your cars threads. Very nice..makes me wish i wasnt so broke. Still, i think im gonna be rebuilding whichever motor i use, so really the hell with ease of installation...which will be faster and cheaper?

Okay, after reading Aaron Cakes Almost Complete Guide to Turbocharging an NA engine, i decided to just swap in the TII motor (after a rebuild). Thanks for the input

it prob. would be better to drop it in because it is quite the work...unless you port match the manifold....how is the compression on the N/A ?? if ya got a wideband, 720's and a rtek with the tII AFM and pressure sensor you can get a little more out of it... :)
but it will prob. be easier to swap motors.... just my thoughts.... |

If you have both motors sitting around, just use the TII. If the TII has bad compression and the NA has good compression, the Turbo'd NA isn't THAT difficult. Just takes some time.
Port your LIM. Just be careful, that damn aluminum (or whatever it is) will melt to the damned bit Hardest part so far for me was the removal of the front cover. I had to remove it because the gasket was REALLY bad and I was losing 3qt oil/600 miles give or take. While I had the cover off, I tapped for an NPT fuel fitting at the base and bolted it in. Beware, you'll need a block off for the EGR on the NA block, because the TII mani's won't sit on top of it. If you remove your front cover to make the oil return, make sure you mark your pulley and CAS ahead of time. My timing is completely out of wack now, and my pulley has no timing marks on it. Project is almost complete few more minor details to work out. It's actually been quite simple. Aquiring parts is a pain in the ass for a Turbo NA, but you got a turbo motor right there. The only thing you need is a piggyback fuel controller and patience. |
Since im poor and my dad hates having non-running cars in the driveway, Ive decided to just drop the TII motor and driveline into the NA shell. While everything is out, though, I'm going to rebuild the engine, do a mild streetport, replace synchros in the tranny (anyone know of an aftermarket dealer for these, and are they better than stock?), rebuild any calipers that need to be rebuilt, and rebuild the differential. Can you think of anything else to do while the car is in pieces?
ALSO what is an NPT fuel fitting and what does it do? |
NPT = National Pipe Thread. It's simply a standard for threaded fittings. You find NPT used in most household plumbing and some automotive stuff.
Edit...Some say that NPT = National Pipe Taper to describe the fact that the threads taper towards the bottom. This forms a tight seal. There is also NPS for National Pipe Straight (threads). Not sure what the official definition is as documents refer to it both ways. |

Well...pretty poor. This is gonna take a long time as I'm gonna have to save up before I do anything. Save 800 for the engine rebuild kit, DVDs, and porting templates. Save 100 for the brakes to be rebuilt. Save 400 for the diff to be rebuilt. It will be a long process, but as soon as I start doing the actual rebuilds, I'll do an aaron cake style thread on the project, with many pictures.

Why do FC owners recommend doing a 13B-T swap rather than just turbocharging an NA? Is it more time consuming or pricey or what?

Looking at the Turbo NA projects ive seen, its much more difficult and expensive.

Swapping a Turbo motor into my NA would have involved...
purchasing a motor - 900-1200 possible rebuild - 500-800 purchasing electronics - 100-300 Turbo'n my NA has cost me purchasing parts/tools - <500 I think I found the cheaper way. Unfortunately at the moment, I can't get it to hold an idle, but that's besides the fact =P. With the entire rats nest removed and no BAC, I think I'm just having problems with air flow. |
6port turbo is not the easiest thing to do....gathering parts is a bitch...90% of it is custom and if you can get the parts cheap, you cant forget about a clutch....stock boost maybe...but your gonna have to change out that stock clutch if you want to have any fun with it..
of course unless you like the challenge!! |
