Turbo Hot Side Glowing Red?

My hot side of the turbo glows a bright red (seeable at night only). I have 130 miles on a fresh rebuild, have straight through exhaust all the way back. Manifold isnt glowing, center section isnt glowing, only hot side. While driving i did not have the under body panel installed and just installed it. No hard driving, no boost, and no RPMs above 4k rpm. This normal?

Car idle completely rock solid at 900rpm. no vac leaks and car just tweaked by Rotary Performance.

That is kinda odd.... Ive never seen my Turbo glow.

Sweeet - now you know why heat shields are important.

J-Rat 08-01-03 12:44 PM

Why? So you cant see the glowing turbo?

pillage6 08-01-03 12:45 PM

You may be running lean.

darkwaveboi 08-01-03 01:43 PM

i thought glowing red was running rich from post ignition of gas in the turbo? the DP doesnt glow either. ONLY the iron

Ever mess with a torch?
Too much gas or not enough O2 & it's colder..

Rich exhaust will heat up a cat, but not a turbo..

I've seen my turbo glowing numerous times after a good hard run.... always thought it was pretty normal.

He said he kept the rpms under 4k. Is it still normal? Inquiring minds want to know.

adamlewis 08-01-03 02:15 PM

Is it glowing after city driving or highway driving?

If its city driving under 4k, Id be inclinded to say you have a problem. If its highway driving, Id say its normal.

2a+RoN 08-01-03 02:35 PM

oh wow! I didn't even read that part. Yeah mine only glows after some real hard runs. 4k... I dunno why it would be glowing then. egt is hotter the more lean you are correct?

Aaron Cake 08-01-03 02:56 PM

He's running too rich. Fuel is combusting in the turbo instead of the engine.

fc3s_gtr 08-01-03 03:00 PM

you have a EGT gauge or a A/F gauge, so u can tell us if you are running lean or rich?

E

darkwaveboi 08-01-03 05:08 PM

nah, i dont even have a water temp gauge, mine stopped working after the reinstall..along w/ my oil press. gauge.

In a week im going to get an aftermarket watertemp, oil temp, and oil pressure gauge.

Im doing 75% city, 25% highway..but yesterday i was doing all city

This can also be caused by ignition timing being retarted. This is not an odd cocurance after a hard run, but is not normal after a sunday drive. Check your timing.
