Tii Rearend Question

I want to upgrade my 90 vert rear to a tII lsd, are any years better or worse ?

87-88 have clutch pack lsds, 89+ are viscous. I've heard the clutch pack is better, but it tends to go after 60-100k. Unless you get a rebuilt one, I suggest an 89+ rear-end. also, unless you have a tII transmission and driveshaft, its not going to fit.

I believe the TII rear would also require the TII halfshafts. Other options are to have a custom driveshaft made, or to simply use an LSD from a non-turbo RX-7 which will fit perfectly. The 4.30 non-turbo viscous LSD from the 89-90 GTUs would give you the most acceleration (lowest top end) if that's what you are looking for. The other LSD's are 4.10.

Thanks for the reply's guy's. I plan on switching the 1/2 shafts also and using a custom driveshaft. My main concern is strength.

I think they are pretty much a wash on strength.

In that case, you will need a TII transmission because your NA transmission is currently the weak point in your drivetrain, not your rear end. My recommendation is to simply pick up a TII with a blown engine ($500-800), and swap the entire drivetrain and brakes. That way you get the stronger transmisison, stronger rear end, stronger halfshafts, stronger driveshaft, better brakes and 5-lug wheels. You can then sell the remaining TII parts and recoup about half of your investment.

My car allready has the 5 lug wheels which I thought meant that I had the better brakes also, did I ASSume wrong ? As far as the trans being the next weak link I have allready addressed that.

Sorry about that, I forgot that the convertible had 5-lug wheels like the coupes. I think they had the sport brakes, too. If the front caliper has 4 pistons, then it has the sport brakes (type B).

Which transmission are you going to use?

Yeah, verts had 4 piston calipers (my friend had to find them when his went bad)
