Throw out bearing

I did some research and never really found an answer that helped me. I'm thinking about buying a 87 RX-7 with 87,XXX original miles for my first car. it has a noise when sitting at idle with the clutch out. my dad said it was the throw out bearing. I was wondering how long do you think it will last like this. and how hard would it be to replace it in my driveway. I dont really have access to a lift. and dont feel like paying the salary at the Mazda dealership. Thanks

well, your gonna have to take the tranny out, i say if its driveable, just save up for a clutch kit and all the fluids and possbily tools you will need to do it and knock it out, and some ppl on here might tell you that it may not be necessary to change the pilot bearing but i sure wish i did when i did my clutch, it kind of a pain to get out if you havent done it before but if you got it in your clutch kit you might as well. good luck!feel free to PM me with any questions

I second that. Just save for a clutch kit and do it all at once. Basically, you have to drop the tranny to do it, which can be a PITA.

if it males noise with the pedal out, it's the pilot bearing, just buy a whole kit and replace everything while you're down, you'll regret not doing it if you don't.

Thanks for the help guys, I guess i'll go ahead and get it and save up for a clutch kit. haha, but now some more questions. Any recommendations on clutch kits that will have all that stuff in it. and will i be able to drop the tranny in the driveway, or will i have to find a place with a lift? Thanks for all the help

That should give you all the info you'll need to put in a clutch and pressure plate.

A lift would definitely benefit you, along with a tranny jack. I'd imagine re-installing a transmissino from the floor would be a huge pain in the ass.

Good luck,
James

My cars was making that same noise when I bought it, over a year ago. I got a new flywheel, clutch kit etc sitting in my room, I've been meaning to do somthing about that....

mine does that, i just turned up the cd player... then my cd player stopped working, so now that its cold i turn up the heat and that covers the noise pretty well, i plan on fixing it when i pull my engine and tranny to have them either rebuilt or replaced with already rebuilt ones.
