For those that want to run without a intercooler
For those that think they can run without an intercooler, here is a captured temp reading of the intercooler INLET and the intercooler OUTLET temps on a .......stock intercooler and a virtual stock turboII.
Fifth gear b/t 3000 and 4000 rpm, on an uphill stretch.
You really don't wanna see the readings up the same hill and in forth at six grand. The 217 degrees figure might up set you.
I'd like to see the inlet temps on a supercharged car without a intercooler, if someone has them.

And those readings were taken with a OAT of approx 65 degrees.
I've seen the readings in the summer in Texas. Ain't a prudy site.
Just driving down the local street this same time the inlet temps were, If I remember right, maybe 100 plus or minus five and the intercooler outlet temps b/t 80 and 85 degrees
I may be just to easily discouraged, but I think a CAI is pretty much a waste of time and effort. Just my opinion (that ought to get a response!).

well seeing that the stock setup gets cold air and anything else cai is a huge job i'm inclined to agree with that.
61% eff on your ic is a little lower than ive seen elsewhere. its usually around 70%, odd

Here's fifth gear, 70mph on a level road for about a full mile (temps go up a tad everytime you go up a grade of any kind). OAT of approx 70 degrees.

And a jpg after the car has sat in the shape after the last jpg above, for about fifteen minutes. A touch of heat soak there.

for the second picture, is T1 = inlet & T2 =outlet?
and vice versa for the FIRST picture???
cuz unless the above is true...the second picture would show that the intercooler actually makes things hotter by some 30 degrees....
I think if you're going to post up more pictures of inlet/outlet temps, be sure to label which is the inlet temp & which is the outlet temp.

OOOPs! I fudged up. In the first two jpgs, the lower temp is the outlet temp of the intercooler.
In the third jpg though, T1 is the outlet temp of the intercooler (actually the sensor is stuck in the outlet hose itself about an inch before the clamp on the intake manifold.
The mixup is due to having to plug two identical looking thermocouples in the top of the meter. And having to remove them to scan the meter, then put them back in place.
I've ID them since you brought it to my attention.

It was great to see some numbers with a good meter. The inlet temps are not that bad though. Makes me want to try water injection even more !
Why do you say that a CAI is worthless? Did you do testing with a stock intake and a CAI?
Just off the top of your head what were the numbers for the hot Texas day?

Yeah, its not like the aktins supercharger gives you a chance to install one though.
This test shows that the stock top mount IC sucks.
I'd like to see this test done on a FMIC.

Yea a CAI is worth it--or at least make sure you're not sucking in hot engine bay air. Sometimes only a baffle is all that is needed. If the intake air is 10 degrees colder, I would think it would drop temps 10 deg. everywhere (close but not exactly). Sort of how OAT impacts the temps.
I've been running with a stock TMIC but no hoodscoop--that's probably worse than no IC. Anyway right now I'm only going to 5 psi so there isn't a problem. Oh and I know what you mean about that Texas heat.
I recently decided to install a Porsche 944 intercooler up front. It's a quality IC and fits perfect. Here's a pic.
Can't wait to get that baby in there and open up the boost.

Try measuring the difference between the outside temp and the temp of the air coming through the radiator. This is what your engine sucks in without an effective CIA.

I hate it when my fingers hit the *P* instead of the *D* key, especially when they're so far apart.
I think I'll go out and put the probes in the air filter and in front of the radiator (I promise not to attach it to the radiator core .

Here's one probe taped to the front of the car. About three inches in front of the hood opening. Right out there in unobstructed air flow.
The second probe is in the air filter housing. No air filter. The probe not touching a thing.
The car at full operating temp (180) and cruising along at 70mph in fifth. Awwww...that's not quite true. This was captured when the clown started riding my bumper and I stepped on the pedal. It's probably doing eight five to ninty mph.
When I was doing a constant 70mph the temp in the air filter container was reading on the whole 81 degrees. Sort of a give or take a degree depending on the traffic in front of me (read truck).
So by stepping on the gas resulted in a bit more airflow thru the filter area and a drop of a couple of degrees.

That title was a *Tease*. It was aimed at folk who have not a clue (like me a year ago or so) about just how hot the air coming out of the turbo going to the intercooler is. And how much that air is cooled by that ridiculous top mounter intercooler (turns out to do a damn fine job, considering).
It was also AIMED at the supercharger bunch. Compressed air gets HOT. It's not just residual heat from the turbo housing that's drives the heat up.
And I've been trying to jpg more ...jpg's...but this site does not like me to attach jpgs.
One jpg was showing a thermocouple inside a airfilter assy with no air filter to interfere ....and the second thermocouple outside the hood, about three inches from the front of the hood. Driving at 70 mph the diff b/t the two was appox 11 degrees. Out side air temp, OAT, was 71 degrees...the heat in the airbox was 81.
Then later I put one of those airfilter tops on that has a opening with a screen over it. The OAT was 73 degrees and the temp in the airbox was ranging from 103 to 107 degrees. So the open top airfilter idea is just what everyone thought....a VERY bad idea. I picked the box up with a turbo afm off EBAY. NOT my idea to cut the top off and put a screen on the top!
I'll try one more jpg, maybe they'll let me...maybe not. Its the one of the airbox with the screen on top.
