Thinking about getting a Turbo 2, few ?'s
 

I am thinking about getting a turbo 2 as my next car. I just have a few questions first:

1) How reliable are the turbo 2's? I have read a bunch of for sale adds that say,"New engine, new turbo, etc...(normally around 120k miles)" My friend has a 3rd gen so i know that the engine basically goes bad in it every 90k miles or so. Is this the same for the turbo 2's?

2) Anything that i should look for in buying a turbo 2? Throughout the years are there any performance changes?

The TII is more reliable than the 3Gen, but less reliable than the NA 2Gen. Much like everything else, reliability is pretty much based on the complexity of the machinery.

Unless you are racing the car, a TII engine should last 120-140K miles before the seals give out.

Series IV TII (87-88) - 2845lbs, 182bhp@6500rpm, 183ft-lbs tq@3500rpm, 8.5:1 compression rotors, mechanical wastegate & metering oil pump, .762 5th gear ratio, 16.6gal fuel tank
Published data: 17/23mpg, 6.7sec 0-60, 19.3sec 0-100, 15.3@98.1 1/4 mi, 142mph top speed.

Series V TII (89-92) - 3003lbs, 200bhp@6500rpm, 196ft-lbs tq@3500rpm, 9.0:1 compression rotors, electrical wastegate & metering oil pump, .719 5th gear ratio, 18.5gal fuel tank, lighter wheels, front end has larger radiator intake and 3x larger brake vents.
Published data: 16/24mpg, 6.5sec 0-60, 18.2sec 0-100, 15.1@93.3 1/4 mi, 146mph top speed.

When you drive the potential car, make sure the boost gauge shows boost as you step on the pedal. Do not accept the reply that the gauge is busted and all's well.

when looking for a t2 just look for one that has everything working on it, idles smooth and drives smooth. consult the forum before making a ourchase though, just to tell about the car and get a few responses.
as for madel year differences, the 89 ups look better and are faster, but the 87-88 can be just as fast and is a little cheaper. any rotary car that is well maintained should last a good while
