Are these rotor housings usable?

Hello all,
Got a TII AE, here are the rotor housings (see photo). The housings got grooves on the edges, approximately about 1/8' wide and can be obseved all around the chamber. Not much flake at all. The motor came with a rotary aviation rebuild kit, but I am wondering whether this is a good base for a good rebuild and street port etc. Thanks Xiaonan |
Forget the pic? :P

Regardless of pics, if there are grooves on the inside of the housings at all, they're blown.

The photos are shown above now. Thanks
|
i would not reuse those.

I thought that a slight groove on one side of the housings was a normal wear pattern due to the Mazda designed multi-piece apex seal. I have a couple of S5 NA housings that show a very slight groove type mark on one edge of each housing.
My housings have about 90k on them. |
motor ran hot?
id use them.... |
I've used worst...didn't last long but was long enough
|
get the housings cermet coated, it's almost like rebuilding them.
|
Yea, but cermet coating is not cheap at all.
In my experience, housings like that will still yeild decent compression numbers. It would be better to get another set of housings though. If it were my motor, I would probably go ahead and use them. Edit: Can you feel (catch a fingernail) that groove above the trailing spark plug hole in the last pic? If so that housing is junk. |
Wouldn't use them if possible, with the right seals (not mazda) wont name brand tho and you could get decent numbers, better off finding better housing if your going to spend the money to build and engine a good set of used housings is possible one of the cheapest parts.

actually cermet coating is still cheaper than buying new housings.

Any recommendations on the coating job? It is a long time ago, someone in this forum offered such a service, and I just did a brief search, some DIY thingies are available .... I also have a 12 motor I was planning on rebuild but found out it has flakes on the edges, can coating fix that too?
A rotary aviation rebuild kit came with this motor (2 piece apex seals), is that a good kit? Thanks all. Regards |
a company called JHB does the cermet coatings in canada.
|
I wouldn't use those...
I would just try to find some good condition/low mileage ones for sale rather than getting new or cermet coated. |
