Talk about your first newbie mod
We all start somewhere, right? And most people's first mod is usually not too daring. I'm sure some people are creative and some are just cheap. I'm both.
My first mod was my horn. I went to the local auto recycler and grabbed the horn from a Lincoln. I replaced my beep-beep with a hoooonck. That's when the neighbours first realized I had a new toy in the garage. |
leather shifter boot
Ebay cone filter, with home made pvc intake, it was like super duper throaty and awesome on my ka24e 240sx. Wait, NO, No it wasn't...
Main and Alt Pulleys
does removing the A/c count?
Straight pipe SON!
swapping in a 13bre in my fc3s... went blind into the project..
New injectors. The guy before me had turbo injectors in my 88' n/a vert...said he needed the extra fuel to work with the high flow cone filter...:facepalm3:
Wow, that is amazing...to be an automotive newbie and start off with replacing an engine.
Gutted the pre-cats but kept the main cat.
Replacing the cats with a straight pipe from rx7.com. I ended up buying mis-matching nuts and bolts, but me and a friend made it work .
Removed the air pump, rat's nest, and sent the injectors out for cleaning. Put on a 3" turboback at the same time. Got the injectors back from injector rehab and found I had 720cc secondaries on a stock TII, so I got an Rtek 1.7 and Walbro to make use of the extra flow.
replaced the headlights with hella JDM raybrigs from my old Celica, soooo bright I blind all the assholes with BMW SUVs now
eBay sort shifter (still need a knob for it), RacingBeat cooling hoses, and machined the front discs. Oh and just today got an optima battery. Thing starts in no time now.
first mod was racing beat road race system, and did a cone filter and air box that same day.
I replaced the stock air filter with a k and n... super tough lol
lets see. it woulda been the metal bar that went under the tranny to stiffen the front end a bit. kinda like a lower strut bar. cant remember the exact name of it
heres the link https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/how-build-lower-arm-bar-under-%2415-448638/ |
Replaced every vacuum hose and coolant hose in the engine bay, along with the radiator and shortly after, the water pump.
Had mine since january, full tune up/fluid change, K&N drop in, cut out stock airbox lid, ebay short shift (caused the trans to get stuck in reverse), dropped trans tore it down and reassembled with stock shifter! Stock exhaust manifold flange stud striped... so new Corksport SS header, obx-r SS turbo catback (plans for turbo swap this winter...) and tanabe lowering springs, and 200 watt amp for factory mini subs. In that order lol.
OP mods are drilled brake rotors, mazdatrix clutch/lightweight flywheel (2007), and stainless braided brake lines. yay. |
Besides repairing the car after its fire, and putting a crappy exhaust one after the factory one rusted, my first real mod was a megasquirt. This was my first car as well.
my first mod was FMIC
cheap obx exhaust that I still have on... -_-...
that racing beat needs to be on soon. |
Don't remember the order, but there were a number in short order: K&N drop in (still there), diff and trans oil replaced with synth., and fresh rubber to replace the tired OEM RE71s that were on the car when I got it. Followed a few weeks later by replacing that rubber with then-hot Yoko A520s after my first track day, and deciding I needed serious rubber :D
gxl lsg swap, s5 tranny(guy before me rigged a short shifter that got my car stuck in reverse) bonez race pipe, borla cat back, 1st gen steering wheel, tanage springs and kyb gas adjust shocks.
replaced my cat with a straight pipe when it broke right off the manifold, new cheapo napa clutch which kinda sucks, racing beat springs and KYB GR-2 shocks. rides awesome.
I wanna say wheels, diff and coilovers.
Got this car SPECIFICALLY to get sideways in. however, in two years it's been OFF jackstands for roughly 150 miles. I should have started out with a better condition car but i learn more by fixing up horrible junkers.... |
yep, you learn more (especially about THAT car) and then you know that everything you replaced is in good condition and SHOULD last you a while.
the only thing is, for every part you replace you discover 2 more that could use replacement as well :P |
does getting the car to run after a year of sitting count as modding? if not then my first mod is putting straight pipe 2.5 inch in a n/a :)
removed the interior about a month ago
Repair the rust underneath...you KNOW its there. Don't be afraid to look.

Never winter driven rocks. |
Pretty sure mine was new battery cables. No problems with the old. Just thought that my battery voltage would improve.
OK, it took a little thinking, 18yrs is a long time, but i figured it out. My first mod was to put a spoiler on the back of my 87 Turbo. I got one that looks alot like stock but didn't cost me the $900 that mazda wanted. It was only $300 or so. AND when I was waiting for them to bolt it on i looked through there catologs. I dicided not to purchase the $350 pacific moonroof. wish I would have.....
they're not "there"
replaced the clutch...then straightpiped and added headers when i bought the car with apexi N1'S...my ears thanked me when i bought the full racing beat exhaust system
Greedy Type-S BOV
I forgot about my vacuum operated 6port actuators as well. Those happened before the MS.

I did the classic ebay cone filter hot-air-intake. It only cost $12 and I got to feel like I was a badass. I have since spent ridiculous amounts of time and money on it, but it's still N/A, and so not badass. :( |
My first "newbie" mod? Hmmm. I think it was a clutch, cause I blew out the original one beating the snot out it.
Full tune up and replace the headunit, previous owner had a cheap walmart stereo:icon_no2:
^same thing plus braided oil cooler lines, exhaust system and pads/rotors all at once. (all before putting it on the road in under a week)
Why did my shit get deleted? I guess the mods do not like me bad mouthing Racing Beat
I will repost. Racing Beat rev II exhaust. It gave me detonation which blew my engine. I called them and they claimed to have no clue that would happen but there was no detonation before the exhaust so you do the math. Make sure if you buy this system you do some kind of fuel supporting mods. I was a noob and I did not know and Racing Beat just wanted their money and did not care to help me. |
