Tail Light Kill Switch....

i am looking for a power for the whole back tail light assembly? is there one main power or many coming from all over the car?

Spool Up 10-24-02 02:05 PM

are you planning a getaway or something?

bcty 10-24-02 02:05 PM

its always possible! :) anyone know where it is?

HIMNI Racing 10-24-02 02:29 PM

I don't know about all the tail lights . but, i did it to my tag lights. I just taped in at the bulbs.Ikeep the switch on all the time unless something comes up and i need to ...............................Well,To much info.

StarionX 10-24-02 02:36 PM

I guess you could tap into the fuse box. :)

Icemark 10-24-02 02:38 PM

just tail lights??? not brake lights???? not all parking lights???

If it is all parking lights you would want to interupt the lead at the light switch.

JKBe30m3 10-24-02 03:11 PM

Tail lights

My brother was hooking up a switch to allow him to turn the headlights on without raising them up and he tapped into the wrong wire and he was able to dim all of his tail lights-he can dim them from full power all the way to where they are off-good if you are cruising at high speeds at night

They helped him quite a few times with johnny law!

poor college student 10-24-02 03:24 PM

i don't get it... how does having the tail-lights dimmed to off helps...?wouldn't he still drive with headlights on? when passing a cop, cop sees headlights........

knight1976 10-24-02 04:02 PM

lol

Terrh 10-24-02 05:21 PM

OMFG! I'm not the only person who has done or wants to do this to a car! In my fiero, I had a switch hooked up so that I could kill all the parking lights (and the brake lights too). Yeah. Think about that. you never know when it might help you one night. Really. at least thats what I keep thinking. hehehe

in it there is a fuse for the parking lights, and I also had to wire in the brake light switch. My reverse lights didnt' work anyways, so I didn't worry about them.

the idea is this: You blow past a cop at a speed trap. He tears out after you. You see the blinkenlights, and kill all your lights and accellerate like hell. a mile or two down the road, find a corner, and use it! then put all the lights on and just drive normally. BING! perfect getaway. hehehe
at least thats the thought.

you can almost duplicate this (but unfortunatly still brakelights) without a switch by just holding the high beam switch while killing the lights.

....

don't ask me why i thought of this, I really have no idea.

Dvst8 10-24-02 06:13 PM

its the red/black wire at the cpu or light switch....
this wire controls the parking lights and taillights.....but does not control the brake lights....like when u press on the brakes...the lights will go on....so u gotta have to find that wire an wire it to the manual switch.

bcty 10-24-02 11:56 PM

all i need is to find a place where it kills all the lights even when u step on the brake.. all i need is for headlights to work.. hmmmmmm?????

mintrx7 10-25-02 12:00 AM

ROFLMAO this is like the funniest thing iv'e heard all day :D, anyways sounds like a pretty good idea to say the least!

bcty 10-25-02 12:08 AM

good idea? GREAT IDEA!!

Dyre 10-25-02 12:15 AM

I know a guy that simply disconnect the brake switch at the pedal... But thats more for street-racing. ;)

rymnryan 10-25-02 12:16 AM

You really just need the kill switch for the brake lights. When being chased kill the headlights and parking lights and turn on the night vision. Now that would be sweet. Except, I think that any on coming headlights might blind you. Anyway I want night vision.

Jimmy325i 10-25-02 01:48 AM

Except when they see the reflection off your rear license plate... Then they can nail you for driving without lights and brake lights not functioning, not to mention failure to signal and evading police... Probably sieze the car when they find the brake light disable switch. (here in MN when you rear end someone its always your fault. so that could be deemed a "tool" of intended insurance fraud)

Don't get me wrong... I've done them in other cars I've had. :)

BlackRx7 10-25-02 01:50 AM

man its simple just pull the illum fuse in the fuse box, you get head light with out rear lights........

rx-7s rock 10-25-02 01:54 AM

yea kill all lights. That does sound good. The only problem is that if you don't go fast enough, your liscense plate still reflects light. But the whole idea is good!

chris-reedtn 10-25-02 01:54 AM

just turn the nob so that the headlights stay up and turn all the lights off, for the headlights to work when you need them to just pull back on the lever.

rymnryan 10-25-02 09:07 AM

Thats when you need to setup the license plate to flip around, get covered, or some how concealed at the flick of a switch. Have all of that and you can get away every time. And your friends will think you are the most ridiculous SOB in the world.

Ryde _Or_Die 10-25-02 09:15 AM

Why not just get a good pair of foglights? Then you can just turn all your lights off and still be able to see to drive. Seems alot easier to me. Plus you get foglights ;)

banzaitoyota 10-25-02 09:18 AM

edible foglights?

Icemark 10-25-02 10:51 AM

What a bunch of moonshiner's :):p:

MaxRX7 10-25-02 10:55 AM

I've thought about that long ago, just turn off all the lights :)
and be careful if some innocent driver in front of you doesn't cut into your path ;)

Terrh 10-25-02 05:26 PM

you are missing the point. What about when you have to turn/stop/etc? brakelights light up!

Roy James 10-25-02 05:34 PM

Shit why dont we all just get a good pair of Night Vision googles and chill... LoL, you guys are going to get your ass fried by the law.

Terrh 10-25-02 05:43 PM

yeah, I don't think I'd actually have the balls to run from the cops. NVGs dont' work either (I actually did some research into the subject), they have too small a field of vision and a crappy refresh rate. Not suitable for driving, especially at high speed. Really especially at sppeds high enough to be escaping from cops. Don't run from the cops, its just stupid. But a fun idea.

NZConvertible 10-25-02 06:47 PM

Jeez, did you guys all take dumb pills this morning? If you think just turning off your lights is going to turn your car into a Stealth-7, you're deluding yourself. While it may be fun to think all cops are stupid, if you think this is actually going to help you, then the cop's the one with the intellectual advantage...

jmseven 10-25-02 07:55 PM

I did this about 10 years ago on my CRX. It did help. But on one occasion, a popo on the opposite side of the road visually noticed my speed. I hit the switch to kill my brakelights and broke hard......

I saw him turn the fuck around, gave chase, and pulled me over. He did ask me if my brake lights were working and told me that he noticed me slow down. He took a glance at my dash to see if I had any switches....didnt see it and just gave me a waring.

It all depends on the popo. If he/she notices you speeding, there is no chance to hide from that.

spazzytroy 10-25-02 07:58 PM

Ok, Stealh-7 writeup here we go

Ive done alot of research into the subject and this is my thoughts/conclusions.
There are 3 ways to get nailed and 3 ways to get chased. We will start with how to aviod getting nailed.

1) Pacing- This is the easiest to avoid but hardest to evade seeing as how they are obvously at your speed to pace you. This is avoided by keeping your nose unpluged and free of congestion so you can smell the bacon when they get close. (ie, keep your eyes peeled for crown vic/impalla shaped vehicles)

2)Radar- There are devices which you can make at home to jam radar. They consist of something using a high frequency radio wave to tell the gun your vehicle is going ~200mph then on the second measurement (it takes alot of measurements per second, then spits out an average) It tells it you are going 0. then the gun is confused and gives an error message. These are VERY illegal. Three things that will nail you with radar.
A)Cop ground vehicles-these can be bikes or cruisers. both are nasty. Radar is the middle when it comes to cop danger. just be wary. Go buy a V1 or a Passport 8500 or better. Radar is pretty wide so you can usually detect it from a good distance when they peg someone in front of you. Early detection is the key to avoiding radar. Also, be wary of the "instant on guns" If your detector suddenly peggs out from the middle of nowhere, bend over and grab your ankles cause u just got shafted if you're speeding. Again, be ware of the new cars that can shoot you while they are crusing. They are easily identified b/c of a large box sitting on the dash against the winshield and one in the back glass also.
B)Cop Helocopters-These things are the absolute devil. Ive been chased by one. IT IS NOT FUN. They busted the local racers (including myself) and the effect of the spotlight was like scattering roaches from a flashlight. They will radar you from the air, take your picture, and mail you a ticket. do not, i repeat, do not try to run from one of these unless you are on RT66 w/ no traffic and a Saleen S7 or better :D
C)Traffic Light mounts- Be wary of these too, they are sneaky. Normally you will get a radar signal and will learn where they keep these things. They work like a helo...radar,picture,ticket in the mail. you cant run from these so be carefull ;)

LIDAR-This stands for LIght Detection And Ranging. This basically shoots a cone of light at a bright spot on your car. then tells how fast you are going. This covers a very small area and is hard to pick up if you arent the one being shot. There is no way to avoid this. but you can CONSIDERABLY shorten the distance at witch they can get an acurate measurement in hopes your detector will pick it up. First you need a car with a low signature. The RX7 is a perfect example of this. next you need to cover up all the bright spots on your car. First target in a speed trap is your front licence plate. Easy solution to this, mount it in your front window. the window makes the cops shoot at the second place, your corner reflectors. Solution to that is to cover them w/ a special clear plastic that disrupts the LIDAR signal enough to get an inaccurate reading. You can pick these up shaped to cover a licence plate, then cut and glue to fit. Do this for the corners on the rear taillights too, and while your at it get one for the rear licence plate. These sheets cost ~$50USD a pop but here is the payoff. A typical LIDAR cop can get an accurate reading from ~400-500ft away, seeing as how they have to notice you are speeding first. W/ the "stealth" aplications, the scenerio would go:"Tag at 500ft, inaccurate reading due to little signal return. your detector should, and i say should because lidar is hard to detect, pick up the signal and give you time to slow down. By this time you are at the 200ft mark and have slowed down enough when he gets an accurate reading." Pretty cool huh?

Now we will go on to getting chased/running.

1) Typical Cruiser- If you blow past one of these at 100mph+ keep going. Typical 0-60 on a crown vic is at very least 6-7sec, give or take for gas, passengers, doughnuts ect. By the time they get to 60, if you are still hammered on the throttle, you should be gone on a side road and out of sight.

2) Police Interceptor-These are the big bad cop cars. They range from Ferrari's to hopped up cammed out 30th AE Camero's and Impalla's. These things are mAdQwiK y0! unless you are running APU and Nitrous on a stretch w/ no traffic and alot of gas, then dont try running. They run Impalla's in San Antonio where there is ALOT of street racing. These things are seriously drag cars.

3)Helocopters-These are the DEVIL! Ive been chased by one. The only way to get away is if he decides to chase someone else. Meaning you CYM guys are shafted :D When i got chased, they had the spotlight and it was like roaches running from the flashlight. I was with ~50 other cars so my chances were pretty good.

**********************FINAL NOTES************************

LIDAR is dangerous. Be carefull.

Running is dangerous. I dont suggest it. dont do it if you are going to endanger yourself or someone else. A fat ticket isnt worth your life or someone elses.

I know all this makes me a hypacrit but im just sharing my knowledge. Thats what this board is for.

Last, a couple of my robotics friends have been thinking about a way to move the licence plate inside the well where the spare tire sat. It would pull the plate back, which sits on a couple of rods, then drop it down into the well, and replace it with a black plastic peice. The rotation takes place on a bycycle chain type thing stretched between 2 pullys. If anyone who knows robotics is interested and you want a pic of what we have, gimme an email at spazzytroy@hotmail.com or a PM.

spazzytroy 10-25-02 08:09 PM

I forgot to mention above: the tailight switch makes a NICE addition to the above. If i were to do it, I would want the interior lights and headlights to stay on(so i can see the guages) but the breaklights/running lights to turn off. I have in the past used the brights through my removed FTP lenses. This works, but you have to go totaly off engine noise and gear to figure your speed/boost/RPM.

This is what i mean about running from interceptors. :D :D :D :D :D

PS-Its photoshop'd by a friend of mine, but it gets the point across. ;) The sign is obvously photoshop'd but the cop, the vette and the car are actually all from different pictures. looks good huh?

Gene 10-25-02 08:54 PM

There are also laser jammers you can buy that actually work. To my knowledge all of the radar jammers on the market are frauds.

thedguy 10-25-02 09:12 PM

My bro knew a guy in Utah that had a SOLID BLACK camaro (forgot what year exactly, but it was a 3rd gen).
He had rims and paint were black. He had DARK tinting. And at nights he'd get up on the freeway, kill the lights (had a switch kinda like what some in this thread want) and would cruise at about 160 on the freeway. Only way he might get cought (been doing this for a couple of years now) is because of his loud ass engine. he has the usual radar detector, and he still watches for cops like crazy, and when he see's one, he'll slow back down, and put the lights all back on.

note: Oh yeah, something he learned the hard way....3rd gen camaro bodies, CAN NOT HANDLE ABOVE 180. he took his baby to the salt flats, and flipped that thing just about 180. so anyone who says they've done 200 in one of those is most likely bsing, or has modded the body to stay to the ground better.

and another note, not all 3rd gen camaro's are owned by hicks....around here, the latino's here own most of 'em, with a few exceptions of my friend.

Thats not a vette. It's a 3rd gen Firebird/trans-am.

Detriuch 10-25-02 10:43 PM

haha you criminal. get a power tester light

car13 10-25-02 11:58 PM

arent there cop radars that beep when cops are around or something like that.

i always thought about getting one ever sense i got a speeding ticket

HIMNI Racing 10-26-02 12:38 AM

Not that this matters But my buddy riged he's plate on a spring, cable and lach. Pull it ....tag snaps up to the tailgate. I thougt in was lame but it's saved are ass two times now. Still wouldn't do it to my 7.

$150FC 10-26-02 02:08 AM

Good god. Ferarri Police Interceptors? I've never ever ever seen that, heh. I know in South Carolina you should beware of the M5 cruisers that BMW gave the highway patrol department, though, heh.

drago86 10-26-02 02:11 AM

If im speeding and a cop goes by on like the other side, i just pull my e-brake to slow down, it doesnt light up anything. Also i saw a custom truck that had a licsense plate that could pop up, or down right behind the cab

Boberino 10-26-02 03:22 AM

Actually, I've thought of putting a switch in that would turn on the brake lights. That way, when some asshole decides to sit on my bumper I can scare the crap out of him without getting rear-ended.

your right, comercial radar jammers are crap. Find a faq or take some electronics classes and build your own.

On the other hand, yes you can jam LIDAR but it isnt feasable. heres why http://www.costreetracing.com/laws/lidarfaq.html

This is one of THE best sites ive run across while readin about this subject

chris_stampe 10-26-02 07:37 PM

Just turn off the lights and use the ebrake. Works like a charm. I actually designed a flip down thing w/ an e-magnet but its too much of a hassle and I dont wanna go to jail so its just sittin in my room. :)

Gershom 10-27-02 02:58 PM

Just kill the brake light switch.....thats easy....make sure you hide the kill switch so you can get to it and no one else knows where it is.....even your best friends are narcs when there is pressure. Next for the rear plate......put a hinge on the bottom of the bracket....magnets on the top side.....fuel door unlocking mechanism......that way you can just pull the cord and your plate just flaps in the wind! then you just have to get out and push it up.....easy easy easy!
