Steering problems

I went to a Motorkhana tonight, and it was huge fun.
Anyway as I pulled out the carpark I noticed a sort of grinding feeling when the steering wheel is moving around the centre position. It sorta jams for a split second then the steering gets light again. It was doing it all the way home. My old man mumbled something about "rack and pinion, grumble, gone, grumble".

So yeah any ideas?????

One other problem: after idling in the queue to go for a run for about 10-15mins, the idle started to get real low(200-500), when i blipped the throttle it didn't respond then backfired insanly, shook the car 4 a few seconds, then revved up sweet (got the whole crowd looking though).

Any help appreciated.

It could be many things. My guess is dirt in the fluid. To flush it, disconnect the return hose and route it to a catch can. Start the motor and turn the steering while adding clean fluid to the reservoir. See if that works out the roughness. If that is not it, check the suspension and steering mechanicals.
