i'm not sure i follow, but if you're talking about the assembly into the transmission you just put it in and tighten the bolt.

if you mean the gear in the little housing thing, there is a little roll pin. so you assembly maybe with new seals, and put the pin in, and you're done

I tried that but bearing does not want to go in and I am afraid to force it. Do I need to line up the 2 gears?

19 tooth versus 20 tooth speedo gear

Hi everyone,
I installed a set of tires with a larger circumference than stock tires. I now have a speedometer reading lower than my actual road speed.

I have the stock 20 tooth speedometer gear, would switching to the 19 tooth gear used in the convertible models raise the dash reading? (5%)

Thanks

You have 3 options with the speedometer gears:
0862-17-441A N=19 S4 3.909 Vert
1669-17-441A N=20 S4/S5 4.100 Coupe
1011-17-441A N=21 S5 4.300 GTUs

The number of teeth (N) are based on the final drive ratio. When swapped out my 4.1 gears for 4.3 gears the speedometer was reading lower at the same RPM. So, I replaced the N=20 with N=21 speedometer gear. With larger diameter tires, your speedometer reading will be lower than your actual speed. So, if you replace your N=20 with N=19, than your speedometer reading will increase by about 5%. What's the ratio of you new/old tire diameter or circumference?

I was able to source a 19 tooth speedometer gear from a convertible. I just installed it prior to mating the transmission to the engine.
This should increase my speedometer reading by 5%, much closer to my actual road speed.
Thanks
Every little bit counts!
