snapped TII intake manifold bolt

Ive snapped my TII intake manifold bolt
The 4.75 inch long bolt in the middle of the manifold that bolts the UIM to the LIM.

Anybody know where to get a replacement? Local hardware stores arent carrying such a specific size bolt.

dwb87 10-10-11 01:28 AM

Would they have one on Mazdatrix? I'd see if anyone near you had one that they'd be willing to sell.

misterstyx69 10-10-11 09:21 AM

I actually got one from a dealer.

Black Knight RX7 FC3S 10-10-11 10:24 AM

dealership ehh
I will have to check with them.

arghx 10-10-11 10:28 AM

see this thread for OEM part numbers https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/s5-t2-uim-long-bolt-length-831891/

Aaron Cake 10-10-11 10:31 AM

Any fastener store. It's just a long metric bolt, M8 if I recall. You may have to get one slightly longer and cut it down. Check the yellow pages under "fasteners".

Osirus9 10-10-11 10:55 AM

^^ This.

I've had to do this a few times. Home depot is ok, Ace is usually better at having odd sized metric stuff. Lowes... slightly better than Home Depot.

order it from mazdatrix if you cant find it local

j9fd3s 10-10-11 12:07 PM

that one always breaks, its like $5 from mazda

Black Knight RX7 FC3S 10-10-11 12:15 PM

mazda dealership is $9 for me
apparently he told me theres only 13 original bolts left in the country LOL
9 days for it to be ordered in.

size is M8 1.25 120mm long

I checked the local mom and pops store, they dont carry the metric ones at those lengths....only standard *sigh* damn you standard size. Found one at Pepboys but its 20mm short.

arghx 10-10-11 04:13 PM

I will paypal someone $5 USD if they take a picture of themselves at a generic fastener store carrying an M8.125 flange bolt 120mm long, interchangeable with the stock s5 bolt. You must take pics with a dial indicator or other accurate measuring device showing that it is in fact the proper dimensions.

Seriously.

Black Knight RX7 FC3S 10-10-11 04:27 PM

Impossible lol
Its So impossible that I ordered the bolt from boltdepot.com

He speaks the truth. NO ONE carries metric parts. I know cause I"ve spent too much time driving around town looking for lost bolts with my rebuild. Time and gas was just one problem..the other is that a lot of them simply cannot be found. Sometimes it's easier to simply suck it up and pay dealerships.

Another alternative, why not call Atkins or other rebuilders and simply ask them. I bet they'd sell one and mail it to you.

TonyD89 10-10-11 08:48 PM

I could get a M8 x140 SHCS, grade 8 equivalent, through work, or our brick and mortar local supplier, and use this thing called a washer.

McMaster has them also, just look down the list.

I always get my bolts from them. You can walk out with all the accessory bolts for like 15-20 bucks.

arghx 10-10-11 09:28 PM

The point I'm trying to make is that it is NOT an "off-the-shelf" part you can randomly find around town.

I could call you on this, but I gotta go 12 miles one way to the store!(I burn 20 bucks to get 5?..nope!)
I bought a couple extra allen type head bolts in 120mm when I did the other car up.
I also bought the longer ones to allow to do an FD upper.
This is from a Fastener type store I go to when I am Absolutely Stuck!
So,ya,,50% of one, half of the other,,it is not readily available but can be had!

Maybe things are different in the good ol' US of A, but here in Canada, metric fasteners are available everywhere. Within a 10 minute drive from my house, there are 4 fastener stores from which I could walk out with a replacement bolt on the first try. Black oxide, plated, stainless or bare, with and without the head flanges (I typically buy without and then use a washer). Hell, I'd have my choice of Allen head, cap-screw, and several others. If they don't happen to have one of the proper size, I just buy longer and then cut it down. Total cost would be about 50 cents, if that.

Are metric fasteners really that hard to find in the US? Didn't the world standardize on metric many, many years ago?

Black Knight RX7 FC3S 10-11-11 09:29 AM

The world did....sadly, the US didnt.

not really hard to find, the small fasteners are easy enough to find in hardware stores. In the hardware stores in my area the metric fastener section is a small fraction compared to the US sizes.

our metric section has actually gotten smaller!

my last errand was to find some 8x1.25 bolts and nuts for my camber plates, i wanna say in grade 16? something strong. i found the bolts, in a bag of 100 for like $8, the nuts? nope. they just didn't exist locally, in a grade that matched the bolts.....

for a 120mm long 8x1.25 bolt, the dealership one is basically the only choice. here.

arghx 10-11-11 12:23 PM

our local go-to fastener store is family owned and has been around for about 50 years. Their metric bolt selection is about as broad as what you would find at Home Depot or some other big chain, and they are not going to special order you something like that unless you buy a box of 50.

Here's something interesting. Most of the metric threaded bolts have basically a standard-sized hex. So an M8 will typically have a 1/2" head which is 13mm. And most of the thread pitches are pretty coarse like you would expect on a standard threaded bolt.

Japan2LA 10-11-11 12:25 PM

Should have pmed me.. I have it... Infact I have 5 5 gallon buckets filled with OEM hardware..

misterstyx69 10-11-11 06:03 PM

I noticed that aftermarket m8's have a 13mm head too!.. sort of a pain in the ass when everything else on the car is 12mm head!

All I have to say is that really sucks. Even my local corner hardware store has a vast enough selection of M8 and M6 bolts/nuts that almost anything in the engine bay could be replaced. And the fastener stores will order anything with typically only a 24 hour wait, even in small quantities.

Seems like I could make some money by selling all stainless engine hardware kits. :D

Molotovman 10-11-11 06:15 PM

Or you can call Malloy Mazda and order one.
