Question small problem

alright, so i'm doing my engine swap (s4 13bt to s5 13bt) and everything is all together and ready to go. When I try to start it up, the starter wont do nothing. i just have a quick question about that. There's 3 wires. one that goes from the little scew thingy on the left to the solenoid. (that should be fine) and then there's a tiny male plug and then another bolt thingy to the right.Which one is the power and which one is the ground? The motor doesn't crank and i'm || from firing it up. i'm soooo anxious

do your cluster lights light up? do your headlights go dim when you try cranking? does it make any sound at all? try checking your fuses and battery connections. the other side of the solenoid is just another brush stud, the one to the left has a strap that connects to the main motor so leave it on the bolt that it came off of, check the FSM to be sure you are putting the positive cable wire on the correct stud, i can't look at my starter right now for a reference..

Im having a similar prob with my T-II. I dont know whats wrong with the starter, but I took it out and took it apart and a lot of what looked like carbon buildup came out (black dust) but it seemed that the main problem was that the armature and therefore the gear was not lubricated correctly. So Im not sure if this is the main problem or if it is just something that happens with age...but when I try to start the car the panel lights dim and I can hear an audible click and I bench tested the starter so I know thats whats making the noise. But the starter wont spin over...so im not real sure what the problem is.
Thanks
