Shifter Problems

My GTU has the infamous "loose shifter" symptoms. It is really loose, you can pull up on it and it almost comes out of the transmission. While it is in gear, you can wiggle it back and forth. It stays in gear but its really loose. It still "clicks" into gear. A fellow rotor head (previous fd owner) told me I should buy a whole new shifter assembly. I read on the forums that this can be fixed with a simple bushing. Should I get a whole new assembly or should I just buy the bushing. Does anyone have any diagrams of the assembly torn apart? I don't want to tear into it without knowing that I can put it back together (don't know if it has any pins or things holding it together that could break).

there is a nice writeup on mazdatrix.com under the FAQ section, tells you how to go about replacing bushings, also they have a good short shifter if you want to go that route, just bought one myself can't wait for that to c ome in... good luck

Should I buy the top set, bottom set and the boot kit? Do I need all of that to fix the looseness?

I don't remember everything I changed when I did mine. But just call up mazdatrix and they should be able to tell you everything you need.

If your shifter is like mine was, you may be talking about more than just the upper and lower bushings.

Thanks, your thread was helpful.

I however did believe though that the s4 uses a lower bushing, because i can tell there is stiill plenty of slop while in gear.
I have an s4, so that means all I should need are the bushings and everything described on Mazdatrix right?

mine had a lot of slack as well, all i replaced was the shifter itself and it shifts fine now.

also check to see if the return spring is in good order.... that was my problem.... it would spring back from going right.... but would stay to the left if not centered on your own
