Searched / RX-8 Shift Knob

Hey everyone,

I'm certain I've seen a few threads about this on here before but I searched and I couldn't find anything.

Is anyone using the RX-8 shift knob on their FC? How does it fit? What adapter do you need?

I just bought myself a miata short throw shifter and I want to put the 8 knob on there. So, NOT on my stock shifter.

Anyone know where I can find a writeup or more information on thread size? (Of course I found the s4 and s5 thread sizes in the archives - S4 Shifter: M12 x 1.5 | S5 Shifter: M10 x 1.25) Anyone know the thread size for the miata short throw shifter?

It's the one that Karack used in his writeup. It has the extension and then the fat "super short" shifter.

Cheers,
Cody

doesn't the rx8 shifter have the gear layout...as in..a 6-speed? lol

CantScreamOverYou 05-02-07 10:49 AM

In other countries, the RX-8 is offered in both a 5 speed and a 6 speed manual. i.e. the automatic in the states is available as a 5 speed in other countries. I've seen it installed and it looks amazing, but only in pictures and I don't know what is required.

The RX8 has the same size as the s5, M10 x 1.25

so then, he'd have to find a non-us rx8 shift knob unless he wanted
1 3 5 R
2 4 6

printed on his, no? (assuming that's how it's layed out :D)

I honestly don't care if it's a 6spd or not, hardly anyone will notice anyway.

The 5spd's are too hard to find, and WAY too expensive.

Cody

OK, I have posted this many times before.

Here is the knob you need. Don't worry about getting ripped by an 'imported' euro 5sp knob. Here is the one you need for a great price!!!!

I have one.
Works great, and fits great, no adapter needed.

headover to 8club and post a wtb, you can get it cheaper, unless you want a brand new one.

Sweet, that knob looks so awesome. Yeah I'm talking with someone over at rx8club about buying their used 6spd.

Now the question is, what thread size is the miata short throw shift knob I'm buying?

Wouldn't it be stock miata threads? What are the stock miata threads?

Or where could I get an adapter?

Cheers,
Cody

EDIT: Another question (cause I haven't asked enough already ^___^ )

Are FDs the same thread size as s5's?

djmtsu 05-02-07 05:53 PM

The thread pattern is Miata=S5=FD. All the same.

Also the knob I posted is a 5spd knob, so you don't look like a poseur.

I know but it's 100 bucks. I can get a 6spd for half that price.

Cheers,
Cody

LeeTheSlacker 05-10-07 09:52 PM

He already answered your question. S4 and S5 shifters have different thread patterns.

And my car can't go 150 MPH but the stock speedometer gauge advertises it. :-P

I'm going to try and retap my s4 knob to fit the super short threads on the miata short shifter I got. (14mm corse.)

Cheers,
Cody

me likes!!

GohtretFC 05-11-07 10:21 PM

I have one from an rx-8. Yes, it does show a 6-spd, but if you drive the car then you know there is no 6th gear. It doesn't bother me and its funny to trick people.

Plus it looks good, and I like the way it conforms to my hand.

Tessai 05-12-07 01:14 AM

Got one on mine as well.

And yes, Miata = S5 = RX8. I've had the stock s5 knob, a miata knob, and now the RX-8 knob all in my car.

Looks wise, the RX-8 knob wins... even if it says there is a missing 6th gear.

Feel wise, I much prefered the Miata knob on my stock shifter. I may perfer the 8 knob on a short shifter, though.

RotaryEvolution 05-18-07 12:03 AM

actually the RX8 knob can fit just about anything because of its insert: FB, FC S4, S5, FD, RX8 and miata.

i currently have it installed on my stock S4 shifter but i did have to manually thread it on(shifter cut it's own threads in the knob insert).

Boosted11 08-02-07 10:04 PM

Rx8 knobs look pretty good i should get me one.
