S5 thread pitch stock water temp sensor

what is it? after reading some threads, i'm under the assumption that it is 1/8" NPT. but RETed says it's 1/8" BSP. mind you, my block is an S5 and not S4.

here's the thread i used as reference:

thanks.

so are you talking about the water pump housing sensor (2 wire) or the rear iron sensor (1 wire)?

rear iron for the gauge. should've been specific. sorry.

"temp gauge sender"

this one.

scratch it. went to home depot myself and found out the size. 1/8" NPT it is.

It is NOT 1/8" NPT

It is 1/8" BSP.

If you are REPLACING the oil pressure gauge or water temp gauge you need this.

If you are ADDING an aftermarket gauge and want the stock one to continue working you need something like this.

Although i have not used one of these before and have no idea if it will fit, considering how close these two ports are to one another.

sorry guys, got a little impatient.

i'll make sure i'll do it right then. time to get that adapter...

any local store that would have such a thing?

i kinda scanned home depot pretty fast and didn't catch anything.

RockLobster 08-10-10 11:21 AM

Probably not your typical AutoParts Store, but call around.

There are plenty of performance parts outfits in Calli...

I just order more locally because the stuff gets here in a day or two...

Rx-7Doctor 08-10-10 12:51 PM

Sorry I thought by that link he would have realized that it was BSP.

Besides Nap Auto parts this is the only other source I have found for the 1/8 BSP to 1/8 NPT adapter. I am sure someone else supplies it but I did not find anything on Stewart Warner or the VDO website-

http://www.autometer.com/cat_accesso...il.aspx?vid=59

#2269 Autometer.

http://www.jegs.com/i/Auto-Meter/105/2269/10002/-1

Which is cheap compared to what Napa wants for theirs which is only available in a 2 piece set. Cost $30.00

For other reference adapters.

so i bought the adapter good while back but barely had the change to put it on recently.

Attachment 722460

sure enough, the sensor was bigger in diameter than the adapter's hole.

used these guys to make the hole bigger
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...680_3260_n.jpg

and had to make do with what i had.

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._4821632_n.jpg

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._8014041_n.jpg

even though i made the hole big enough, the threads DID NOT match.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...4_281611_n.jpg

it's much more coarse (sp) than the fine threading of the sensor.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._1955526_n.jpg

i don't know if the threading was vice versa (the outside being the threading on the inside and inside being out) but all i know that it didn't fit. :dunno:

not really asking much but just wanted to share what happened. i just ended up putting the water temp sensor back in without the adapter.

The 1/8 BSPT and 1/8 NPT will interchange.
The difference is the first has 28 threads per inch the second has 27 threads per inch and from a practical perspective, the taper will lock before the thread discrepancy matters.
I've done it several times without leaks or thread damage.
