S5 T2 tranny rebuild
 

If any one has ever rebuilt their transmission what tool did you use to remove the locknut that is all the way down the shaft. Mazda calls out for SST 49-1243-465a but I can't find it anywhere. I can just cut the old nut off, they are supposed to be replaced any way, but I would still have the problem of putting the new one on and torqueing it down. Any help or suggestions (pertinent) would be appreciated.

the stock tool is like a socket that is whatever size, but its like a foot and a half long.

you could buy the right socket, and then weld a pipe to that.

When I was rebuilding my S5 NA transmission probably 5+ years ago, I tried to buy that special tool too. Like you said, it's not available. So, I built a tool to remove that nut. It's not as simple as j9fd3s has alluded to. There was a lot of grinding and machining involved. It took a long time just to make that tool. I also talked to a guy at a transmission repair shop. He said that they usually use a hammer and chisel to loosen that nut. The chisel is positioned at an angle such that when struck with a hammer the chisel will spin that nut off. They also tighten the new nut with hammer and chisel.

the special tool is a hammer and chisel, as hot dog said. just try not to mangle it up too much, and put it on a grinder before reassembling to knock off the burr.

i like a good snap on air hammer. smooth triggers are your friend.
