S4 NA to S5 JDM Turbo conversion

I bought an '88 NA a couple of weeks ago and bought a JDM turbo engine from a local dealer the next day. I gambled on the year of the engine and only later found that it was an S5 while my car is only an S4. Is there any way to leave the current internal wiring so that I don't have to tear out the dash? I'm kind of clueless on what I need for the S4 to S5 conversion, so any hhelp on what I need to do, and where to get the parts would be very helpful.

search.

easily put, use the s5 block in the s4 chassis use the manifolds and it's easily done.

Just Finished

I have just completed this swap. I used a S4 TII wiring harness (goes to ECU) and a S4 TII front engine cover. I also used all S4 TII sensors. I did not change out the dash or starter wiring harnesses.

Thanx

Michael

is it just a bare engine or is it a complete engine with harness and ECU?

The Engine came with the uncut harness and wires, the only problem is that the ECU that came with it doesn't have the same connections as the old ECU. Here are pics of the two ECUs. The N327 is the old one, and the N374 is the one to the JDM engine. As you can see, the connectors are very different from each other. I have already re-routed the Engine wiring for a US car, so that isn't a problem, but getting the ECU to hook up to the rest of the car is.

you just have to rewire the body electrical part of it.....go to www.iluvmyrx7.com to download the PDFs of the FSM(factory service manual) and you can install it......all you have to do it go to the junkyard and get the S5 BODY harness off the junked car(since your S4 harness will not fit) and rewire it according to the FSM and it should work.......please correct me if i'm wrong.

Just for future reference for ppl: here is the diff. between S4 and S5 ECU harnesses:

Sorry to ask such a stupid question, but what wiring are you talking about when you say to get the S5 Body harness from a junker? Sorry, I'm still not too familiar with the wiring parts of the conversion. Also, what part of the FSM are saying to refer to? There are several different files on the Electrical aspect of both 86-88 and 89-92 versions.

neogum 03-18-05 11:39 PM

I did it. The easiest way to do it is Throw the new engine block in and use your old manifolds wiring harness and everything. Not to hard kinda time consuming though. Wow I think youll need ALL turbo parts. Harnesses (from ebay easiest) or find a TII junker parts car for like 600 dollars. Cause youll need tranny, shaft, and differential.

tomoguisuru 03-18-05 11:44 PM

okay, but what did you do for all of the wires and hook ups that don't have the same connection type between the S4 and S5? I'm planning on putting the new engine in tomorrow, so I'm trying to find out if there is anything that I need to do first besides what I've already done.

Madrx7racer 03-19-05 12:40 AM

look, the harness that comes from the engine(S5) to the ECU will match up to the ECU( because it is an S5 also). The other harness/es are for the electrical for the rest of the car and you have an S4 chassis therefore the body harness will not fit in the S5 ECU......so, you go to a junkyard and find an S5, hope you get lucky and cut the harness from the S5 chassis and then using the FSM figure out which wire from the S4 end coincide with which wire on the new S5 harness(this is where the FSM comes in Handy AND TO YOUR QUESTION ABOVE!!!! DOWLOAD THEM ALL AND PUT THEM ON CD WHILE THEY ARE STILL AVAILABLE......IF THE SITE LOSES THAT INFO FOR WHATEVER REASON YOU WOULD HAVE TO PAY 110BUX FOR THE ACTUAL BOOK) then splice the wires and solder them to avoid any bad connections and plug it in.......hope you didn't juck up and it should work....

Will the same thing have to be done for the power harness or can I just hook up the old wiring to the S5 block?

? i don't know what you mean by "power harness"

silverrotor 03-20-05 08:26 PM

My way was abit more [i]unconventional[i] when I did the s4 NA >S5 TII and may not suit your approach.

*I put a block off plate to eliminate the electric Metering Oil Pump. From there I started premixing 10ozs to every FULL fill up of 94 octane.

*I replaced the Power Harness (the one that goes to the Passengerside) with that of a standalone Engine Management System using a Microtech LT8.

All was well from there.

I don't know what it's actually called, but its the wiring that connects to the battery. It's conpletely seperate from the ECU wiring harness. The connection types differ between the two models, so I was wondering if I'll just have to splice in the new connections or just use the one off the 13B engine and place it on the 13BT. Here are pics of what I mean.

give me the turbo ecu and wiring...
use the na ecu and your old harness for the turbo engine

hey! it owuld work!

tomoguisuru 07-23-05 12:42 PM

I've installed the engine now, and am still having trouble with the ECU and whiring. Does anyone know if it is possible to just switch it out and put an 88 TII harness and ECU on? If you can do it that way, does anyone know where I can find that stuff?

tomoguisuru 07-26-05 12:32 AM

So, here is my progress thus far.
- removed the old NA engine and ECU
- rewired the Turbo harness to match a left-side driver(USA standard)
- put the S5 turbo engine and transmission in
- replaced the NA with a Turbo drive shaft
- replaced the S5 power hookups (i.e. the harness that hooks up the alternator to the chassy) with the old S4 version along with alternator
- hooked up all fuel, oil and coolant lines
- restored power to the car

What I need help with....
- The re-wiring of the ECU to fit onto an S4
- Where to get a down pipe and Cat
- and should I trade out the rear differential for a turbo one, or can I just replace the NA plate with a turbo plate and be fine?

I know that I have asked the re-wiring question before, but I am still lost as to what needs to be re-wired and what can be left out. Any help that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

SonicRaT 07-26-05 12:34 AM

Your best bet is to just get both FSM and compare the ECU wiring from the dash harness, and then finding a S5 dash harness connector and splicing into that. This is usually why we suggest people don't swap between the series.

tomoguisuru 07-26-05 12:50 AM

I can see why this is suggested against, but my friend was the one who purchased the engine for me and well, now I'm stuck with having to deal with the issue.

I think I found something that will help though. At rotaryresurrection.com he had posted the following in the S4->S5 section and I'm wondering if this is what I've been looking for.

"It actually pretty simple. It’s just a matter of un-pinning and re-pinning the plugs. Take the FB01 (S4) cluster harness and cut the tape at the Y of the harness (you will need a little extra room as the plugs are further apart on the S5 cluster. Now looking down the female pin side of the plugs, there are little plastic tabs that hold the pins in. You will need to push those pins towards the middle of the plug to release the pin. I use a small pick myself.

Non turbo, Turbo will be slightly different because of the boost wires.

So, looking at the white plug,

Pin A = green/red

Pin B = blank

Pin C = Blue

Pin D = Black

Pin E = Red/green

Pin F = black/white

Pin G = Grn/white

Pin H = Blank

Pin I = Brwn/white

Pin J = Brown

Pin K = Yel/Blk

Pin L = Blk/Yellow

Black Plug:

Pin A = Black

Pin B = small Red/White

Pin C = Yellow/Red

Pin D = Blank

Pin E = Blank

Pin F = Yellow/White

Pin G = Blank"

Throw all that shit away and install a stand-alone EMS? :D

okay then, what do you suggest? There are a lot of EMS sytems out there, but which would work best for the conversion?

Megasquirt, Haltech, Microtech, and Wolf 3D. I also highly suggest that you upgrade everything from the transmission back.

Luciu$ 07-26-05 05:19 PM

I did this like a month ago. I hope to make some writeup soon. Its not that hard just check both FSM's wiring diagrams and connect whatever is needed. You need to get at least the F-31 from S5 front harness (the one that plugs into ECU). You also need to connect FEM-01 and FEM-02, it might be best to cut them from original S4 emission harness and solder to S5.
BTW I don't have S5 wiring diagram in pdf file, does anyone have it? I'm just about to scan it, but I have quite old and used FSM. It would save me a lot of work if anyone already has it. I'm also looking for EU specs FSM.

so basically you need to rewire the BODY electrical now? I assume that you already did the alternator wiring and the main fuse(100A) wiring and grounds and you ran the ENGINE WIRES and harness through the firewall and it is ready to plug into the ECU correct?
