Rx7world bolt-on convertible top?
 

Anyone try the Rx7world already assembled 'bolt-on' vert top? They claim its all assembled and you just bolt it on.

I've searched and concluded 50% people say a vert top is a pita to install, and the other 50% say its not so bad. Im thinking its bad. Just trying to research it before I tackle this one. So far I have Robbins my number one contender, but sure would prefer something simple like a bolt-on.

I am interested in this topic as well. My top is in bad shape.

i'd love to know more too... my vert top is all botched up and that car is going to get some much needed attention this fall/winter

just had mine done there, looks sweeeet! :bigthumb: Tell'em Scott sent you. There setup is cool, they have a vert that is cut from the backseat on back and they just make the top on there. I think they said something about making it a trailer one day. :D

Just out of curiosity, does anyone make hard tops for the 'verts? I always liked the kits they make for the Miatas and wonder what it would look like on a FC. :D

I dont think any one has ever made one before, but really whats the point? For the cost of the hard top, you could probably buy a coupe

this has been discussed, please do a search. nothing on the hardtops, just some crappy attempts, but back on topic. The bolt in procedure is not too bad at all. :bigthumb: You can private message me and i can talk to them about a group buy price.

I remember seeing where some guy had shallaced on fiberglass over the original vert top in an attempt to achieve the hardtop sensation. It was the stuff nightmares are made of...

No hardtop options in the US for Verts have I seen. Might try looking abroad.

I'd like to find a kit that eliminates that ridiculous, heavy targa in favor of a more conventional system. I would also like a kit in canvas, not vinal. And how about a tonneu cover? That would be real nice.

first off they do make canvas tops. But german cloth is the best. Second they came stock with a tonneu cover. Its just missing from your car. They even came with a leather bag that you could put your targa top in and fit it in the trunk.

As long as the power works on my top, I'm not complaining.....and I'm knocking on wood because whatever can go wrong has since I bought this... :)

I just got both of those items for my car.....The factory original is very nice, I was lucky and it is in great shape....what a difference on the look....As for the cover for the Targa....it would help if the trunk was just a tad larger.....need room for that and two sets of golf clubs....

I just got my top done at a local upholstry shop, they had to order the top and have it made before shipped but it was vinyl. looks great, no leaks, and no complaints. set me back about 1100 but saved me the massive amount of work so worth it to me.

Yes, german cloth is good, but the stayfast canvas looks identical to it without the inner dobby pattern (since the headliner will cover it anyhow) and it is a bit cheaper as well.

as for a tonneau cover, the one he speaks of is not the stock one, but a cover that covers the entire driver's compartment when the top is down, usually with a zipper down the center so that the driver can unzip the driver's side of the cover and leave the pass. side covered. These are seen commonly on roadsters, as well as some ragtops (old Jaguars, MG's and the like).

And lastly, although heavier, the targa is a vast improvement when it comes to road noise and torsional rigidity when latched. I wouldn't toss out the baby with the bathwater by losing it.

Yes, I was speaking of a tonneu cover, not a top boot. The tonneu covers the entire driver's compartment so you don't have to put the top up, the tonneu is waterproof so rain isn't a problem. And yes, a miata top is pretty much what I'm looking for, I wouldn't even mind having a miata if it had a 13B in it.

Hey Scott, can you provide any details, ie, how long it took to remove your top (I think they wanted the old top as a core, right?, install time, vinyl or cloth, anthing else that helps us decide? How's the quality???

Quality is top notch, i've replaced the top before when i lived in texas and wasn't too pleased with it. but this is nice and tough, looks like it'll last in harsh enviroments. I have a custom speaker enclosure back there so i'll tell the story from after i pulled it. Just a few bolts all the way around send it off. Then get it back and bolt everything back in. Since it's new it's going to be really tight but once you clamp it down and pull it out in the sun it'll start to stretch to fit. You rather it come tight than loose. Everything laid down nice with no ripples or anything bubbling up. You could do this project in a day or two depending on if you have a garage. If i hadnt already shipped my car to TX for my move i'd take some pictures. The cut up vert he has is a nice setup so he is pretty quick about the whole procedure.

700 is actually an awesome price..... Thats basically what you are going to pay at an upholstry(sp?) shop.

yup that's what i said, and its better from someone that has done tons of rx7 tops. most shops are like "well i'll be, dag gum, i didn't know they made these in convertibles." This line is followed by me punching them square in the face and blowing exhaust fumes all over the shop. :bigthumb:

The price of the top is way cheaper. I am suprised that this thread made it this far without anybody bringing up the source that's been used by forum members for a couple of years. $259 vs 700+
