Reload this Page 91' 2nd Gen Torque Converter... Where the eff!!!

Hey guys,

My daily FC just rev's now. It has a rebuilt tranny in it that I thought was the issue before but that didn't work out.

I don't need a race one ($500+) since it's a stock/auto and have only found an OEM replacement at Autozone. Does anyone know if those are any good or have any I've never put any major parts on my car from an auto parts store but can't seem to find these things. Or does anyone know a good source for these things? Thanks.

You'll be lucky to find minimal help for what you're asking. Very rarely do people stay with an automatic transmission, so this is one area most people won't know a lot about.

Anyways, I've never had to deal with discount auto parts stores for a torque converter, but I'm sure it's probably just as good as any other one you're going to get. Obviously for the best quality you'd want to get one from Mazda, but that may get a bit pricey

Whenever I would install a rebuilt automatic, I would always insist the customer bought a new torque converter anyways, but I doubt it's your problem. Possible, but doubtful.

Did you follow the troubleshooting guide from the FSM? It actually doesn't even say the TC could be the problem! Try following along with the guide, verifying everything before blowing more money.

That's what everyone said the 1st time around. My car just revs no matter what gear and when I replaced the tranny the 1st time it did the exact same thing. I'll read through the troubleshooting guide and double check it can't be anything else. Thanks.

I'm not very familiar with the Rx7 automatic transmission, it's pretty rare to find one these days. Check to make sure the shift linkage is adjusted properly and that it is actually fully engaged in a gear before you try to move it. Make sure you're checking the fluid level on a flat surface, warm the car up fully, shift through all the gears, place the car back in park, then check the fluid level with the engine on.

If the fluid level is still fine, you need to check the fluid pressure. You can do that at with a few adapters and an oil pressure gauge. Just tap into the cooler line.

I helped a friend rebuild his Ford AOD transmission, but when he installed it, he didn't adjust the throttle valve cable properly. Unfortunately, that lead to the transmission slipping badly, it wouldn't shift until redline, and within a mile or 2 the transmission had completely burned up. He even needed a new front pump because of it.

There is an adjustment for the vacuum modulator on the Rx7 transmission...

You may be looking at another burned up transmission.

Did it drive at all after you installed the rebuilt transmission?

All I can say is good luck...

The TC should have been replaced with the rebuilt trans, most places won't warranty the tranny unless the TC is completely redone.

my guess is its incorrectly installed and forced down on the pump.. expect its buggered

when you install them you are supposed to rotate the TC till its drops in and clunks home BEFORE you fit the bolts that join it to the flexplate and ring gear and before you nip the gearbox bolts tight

fail to do so by pulling it on with just the bolts and you crush the pump .. seen it a few times now

Hmm... it had this issue before I installed the new tranny. We removed the TC and refilled it with new fluid then set it back in. Seems like everyone thinks that TC are never the issue then why would you need to replace it with a new one when installing the new transmission which I have heard and read a lot about. I have to take a closer look at the car when it stops being so freaking cold. I'll double check the linkage and fluid levels. Thanks for the advise guys.

Because they are impossible to clean without taking apart. If there are pieces of old transmission floating around in an old converter and you put it on a new transmission.....there goes the new transmission.

What bumpstart said is also true, you can't just set a converter on the trans and be done. There are two stages of converter "alignment" before it's completely installed. If this isn't done properly then it WILL crush the front pump when you tighten everything up.

Sounds like a great opportunity for a manual swap.

If you're not swapping I have an auto trans if you're interested. It slipped when I took it out though, not.sure if torque converter or not but I've driven the car for about 6 years. I had to keep the ATF level low or it just slipped the whole time. When I replaced the trans filter there was a fair amount of metal shavings on the pans magnet. Pm me if you're interested. Seems serendipitous that this would happen as I was just wondering who would want an auto...

Iv been to busy to take a look at the car again. But at this point it would be cheaper to get another auto tranny since it seems like mine is done.

TC was installed correctly from what I remember. Aligned and all that jazz. Not that it matters now anyway since none of it works. Thanks for the help guys!
