Reguarding miata transmission

So, I'd really like to do the miata swap as seen on mazdatrix.

Though, i wasn't sure if they mean that the internals are swapped, or can the whole transmission be swapped?

And, is it possible to swap the 6 speed in? Or should i stick to the 5 speed?

The only ones i've seen they swapped the internals out of the miata transmission into the fc transmission. There is a thread on here somewhere giving a pretty detailed rundown of all that needs to be done to make it work but it is pretty intense if you have never torn a transmission down before. No matter what i'd stick with a 5 speed; with a 6 speed (rx-8's are the only ones I've driven) you end up constantly shifting while just driving around. Since top gear isn't much different there is no high speed cruising advantage or anything.

The stock Miata and RX-8 6 speeds have shorter final drives, and the shifter locations aren't the same either (I think), so you actually have higher highway revs and more shifting to get there; no advantage, and fabrication to be concerned with besides. The Miata swap involves swapping the internals, iirc. It's mainly about a possible source for parts from the relatively plentiful Miata.

the miata engine bolt pattern and trans mount are totally different, hence you need to put the guts into the Rx7 case. and you can do that because the non turbo rx7 transmission is the same design as the miata.

however the 6 speeds are totally different and share no parts.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I'll look through the archive and see if I can find the write up.

I have a Miata transmission in my basement and contributed to the original swap thread.
Additionally, I helped my neighbor, Molotovman with the swap on his 1989 "GTUs".

That being said, all answers are given in the following thread.
