Very likely, and your original mix was watery enough that it began freezing, so it could just be burn-off from some undisclosed location. Whenever you get the FP stuff figured out, that should be easy enough to diagnose. At least, if the temperature starts going up.

At this point, I think that unless the system fails again before I replace the FPR and COR, I'll never really know what failed. I can live with that, as long as the damn car runs properly. :)

Until the day that it just randomly stops again... That's what sucks about these kind of things. Maybe it just doesn't like the cold. At least we know where the problem is in not so many words.

not all coolants smell the same or even like coolant at all when burned. don't rule out that it couldn't just be a bit of coolant that is sitting in a pool on or near the exhaust that is cooking off. most coolants i can sniff the exhaust for, others i have started to choke and have my eyes burn even standing 10 feet away and they weren't running that rich but did have coolant seal failures, that i was trying to identify.
i would still suggest blowing things out with compressed air if you can get it somewhere where you can do this. coolant won't evaporate like water will even when the engine bay temps are at normal, so it can sit in electrical connectors for quite some time. |
She has yet to not fire up normally every time I've cranked her. :)
The next time I started her, that mystery steam/smoke didn't appear. I think that it was standing water and the heat from that first warm-up was enough to eliminate it. I've had identical steam rising from the rad each time I've let the engine warm up enough and I believe I'm seeing the same thing. I discovered that the coolant overflow tank contained a nice chunk of ice (duh,) which further explains the explosion - the system might have otherwise vented to the tank until it was critically low on mix. Instead, KABOOM. She seems to be running perfectly normally. The e-fan kicks it when it's supposed to and I haven't spotted any leaks or oddities. I guess we're done here. Thank you to all who replied and offered input. Even the grumpy ones. ;) |
