Quick Release Steering hubs
 

As im continuing to gather all my parts for my 91 fc build i got to the point where i wanted a quick release steering hub. I looked around at something pages but they all seem to be pretty old and its people slightly going back and forth about what hub to get and about welding one on and such, but i was wondering if anyone has a good hub on mind that would really work, no play in the wheel or anything of the sort. I do not want to weld anything on. I was looking at the Sparco wheel adapter /quick release hub and was wondering some things.
1. The Sparco steering wheel hub adapter has a option for a 86 rx7 and from what i know and read, most parts from 86-91 are the same, so would that work for me car.
2. Im assuming i would need the hub adapter if i wanted the quick release hub, am i correct?

this is my first build ever and im just trying to get everything right and not take a wrong turn or buy something that is just trash. Since other people have done build already im assuming there are people out there that know what is good and not

When I replaced my steering wheel I used the NRG wheel and adapter. Yes this is a lower to middle of the row product, but it worked good. I did have to do some modifying to the column cover and the turn signal cancel cam/ring to make it fit tight and correctly but nothing major.
Just curios is there a reason you want a quick release or just going for the cool factor.

Here is what I had to do.
1. The NRG hub sits deeper on the steering shaft so if you try to put it on and tighten in down you will crack the cancel cam, you have to trim it back and leave the ears if you want your turn signals to work properly.
2. The Hub adapter is larger in diameter, I trim my column cover to fit and cut some vacuum line trim out the rugged edge.

Most Hub adapters will fit most steering wheels, they are pretty standard 6 bolt 7 bolt 9 bolt, you get the idea, just make sure the hub you buy will work with the wheel you have.
If you are dead set on a quick release, you will have to install the hub adapter, then the quick release to the hub, then steering wheel to the quick release.

the momo hub doesn't require any modifications to the steering column

I just want a different wheel/cool factor and there has been some car left/break in around my area so a wheel not in the car at all times would help a little more with that, until my garage gets empty. Old owner of my house has his 68 camero stored in there.

im running one with a nrg slim quick release and a tomei wheel. shits pretty sweet

i definitely agree with not having to modify, if i would have know i would have probably ordered a different hub adapter brand. But it really wasnt that bad. It just took some thinking to make it work properly. Plus the upper and lower column covers are not that expensive and after putting the vacuum hose around the ragged edge it doesnt look bad. And i am typing in all caps. Ooppps

I think it still looks great with the edge, it really cleaned it up.

I'm not using a quick release, but I am using the same NRG short hub pictured above in littlebit421's post. Just wanted to note that I did not have to alter the turn signal cancel ring. I still had to cut the steering column cover plastic to make the hub fit (as pictured), but what you can do is grind off the lip on the plastic and then slowly grind and test fit so it is almost invisible.

I have an early '86 model though, and I've been told they had some weird design quirks. It's possible my turn signal cancel ring is designed differently. I will try and take a look when I get a chance.

The car I installed on was a 87 model, and when trying to install the hub, I started to tighten the nut and heard crack. I damaged the cancel cam. It was like it was trying to press the cam deeper on to the column and it wasnt going to go any deeper. (Beavis and Butt Head "He said DEEPER hu hu". The cancel cam I used was out of my donor car and it is a early 86 build, so early that the coolant over flow reservoir is mounted on the driver front shock tower. I dont know if this makes a difference but my 87 is a factory non power steering car, and the 86 parts car is a power steering car, the cancel cam is the same but may sit different in a power steering column versus a non power steering if there is even a difference between the two. Also I call it a cancel cam but am not sure exactly what the technical name is, but I am referring to the plastic thing I trimmed pictured above.

And as wondrous said you can take your time and get a real nice tight fit, I already had in my head what I was going to do so I just made sure I cut the hole big enough to clear the hub.

I forgot about this thread, but it being revived (thanks Kaden338) gives me a chance to correct a piece of incorrect information I gave above.

My turn signal cam was in fact crushed when tightening the hub, but for some reason it didn't have any ill effects the first time because it remained functional even when broken. Then when I took it apart it broke entirely.

If you have access to a 3D printer, DC5Daniel was kind enough to share a design for a shorter version of the hub that works with the NRG release here.
