Question Quick offset question

I need to get rims very soon. The rims i want have either a 38mm offset or a 42mm offset and i know my TII uses a 40mm.
I just need to know how much if at all i can stray from the 40mm offest mark to get the rims i want?
Thanks.

It depends on width and tire size...

Well i have some dunlop performance tires sitting around that happen to be 17x7's and i wanted to use these so i dont waste them. But i kinda want to go with a wider rim/tire, but im afraid of rubbing when i get my suspension which is going to drop the car approx .8"

What would you guys reccomend??
