Question about Member's DRL writeup...
 

Ok so i obviously want to hook up DRL's on my car... Ive read through Aaron's write up, its very good. But im confused about the relay? Can you use a DRL module, similar to the one in the picture? I bought mine from lordco, its just a universal DRL module. There are 3 wires, the pink wire connects to a wire that runs 12V only when the ignition is turned 'ON', the yellow wire supplies the vehicles low beam with 12V, and the blue wire supplies the module with the signal to disactivate the DRL when the lights are headlights are turned on manually. If this is not the relay i use, then were can i get a relay like the one Aaron suggests?

You wasted your money on the DRL module. Follow Aaron's write-up and wire up the relay as shown in the attached pic. The headlights will turn on (but not rise) whenever the ignition's on. You can also put a switch in any of the wires to allow the lights to be turned off if you want.

So were do i get a relay like that???? Im not an electrician

Ill just print the picture and run in there and ask for the relay in the diagram.

Just an opinion and nothing more: I think we should be allowed three free shots at any car with day time running lights. And I don't mean shots with a camera. ...some humor, mostly not humor.

I don't see what the problem is with DRL? :) In Canada, they've been legally mandated on new cars since something like 1990 and have been shown to reduce head-on collisions. I'm not sure what you guys in Texas see for fog and heavy rain, but around here it's a common occurrence in the spring and fall. Anything that makes a car more visible is important.

Well being from Canada myself, ive driven from coast to coast 4 times and also having lived in Quebec for half of my life... I can honestly say that we too have our fair share of idiot drivers. Personly i dont think that i should be obligated to install DRL's on my personal vehicles, mainly because i have a simple rule of when I turn my lights on. When i cannot physically see the sun shining, then i turn my lights. I think this is a pretty fool proof way of remaining visible on the road. But just like everything else, there are always those idiots that dont take their personal safety seriously let alone the safety of others. And thanks to those idiots, that is why canada has DRL's....


I have a few other electrical/wiring questions. I need to wire in the two rear side markers into my 'parking light' system. I have no clue were i would start. And since my JDM rx7 has seperate lights for the FTP system, i can just use my FTP lights for my DRL's and not my headlights. So heres what i need to know..

1. How to wire in my rear side markers so they turn on when my 'parking lights/headlights' are 'ON'
2. How to wire in my FTP lights to run when my ignition is 'ON', and turn off when my ignition is 'OFF'


A little bit of this has being answered by Aaron Cake's write up, but those DRL's are with the use of the headlights as the FTP lights correct??

Also, daytime running lights can help reduce insurance. I know it's a discount on newer cars. I often drive with my lights on because it makes your car stand out that much more (in a good way).

Wire them in parallel with the taillights (red/black wire).

I know it's just terminology, but JDM FC's don't have a "FTP system", they have front marker lights. Obviously this means you can't use Aaron's method.

Using the JDM marker lights as DRL's is pointless IMO because a pair of 5W lights isn't nearly bright enough. Buy yourself a pair of small fog lights to use instead. A simple ignition-controlled relay can switch them on when the car's running.

DRL's are a good device for motorcycles. People in cars DON'T look for motorcycles and run motorcycles off the road, you name it. Lights on a motorcycle do help.

Even then it should be optional for a motorcyclist to have them or not have them.

DRL's on cars negates any effect of a motorcyclist having them. Common sense thing. If everybody had their lights on,they'd (the lights) be ignored all together.

It cost fuel to run lights on a car. Last time I looked the HYSTERICAL AL GORE types are saying the END OF THE WORLD is at hand. REPENT and don't burn fossil fuels! Save the EARTH (note the capital letters for earth, much like you would write GOD's name in caps, after all, it's their religon).

Turn the lights off and save gas and keep the price of gasoline down, to some extent anyway.

And while I'm here, save a Mexican and don't use ethonal. It's driving the price of the Mexicans basic food stuff (corn meal, etc) out of sight. They're starving to death . So. Stop the killing and turn the damn lights off til it gets dark.

And that dosn't includr the price of bacon and steak. Gonna starve a poor 'Merican if you keep using ethonal.

If that were true then the result would be total carnage on the roads every night. Everybody would ignore everybody. ;)

I don't agree though. Personally anything with its lights on catches my attention, which is why I use my fog lights in anything but perfect conditions. There are so many inattentive idiot drivers out there; anything that pushes me into their consciousness a little earlier is a Good Thing.

I worked out it costs me ~15c/hr in extra fuel to run all the car's lights (headlights, fog lights, taillights, instruments), or ~5c/hr for just the headlights. It'll cost you even less coz your gas is cheaper. :D
