proposed tail light design LED
3 Attachment(s)
I'm getting a set of S5 tail in the mail this weekend. looking into fabricating som LED arrays for lights. i know about the whole oven thing to get them apart, but i just wanted some opinions on this design.
the ring of light around the outside might have the LEDs embedded in polyethylene (opaque milk bottle plastic) to soften the glow of them, and make them have more of a halo effect. while the actual "brake" light would be an array of narrow band LEDs. the directionals would have just an array and an "emergency" flash pattern of the 4 quick pulses then steady on for 1 sec, off, repeat. anyway, let me know what you think of my quick 5 min photoshop to see the concept. the last pic is that of the tuner that was floating around a while ago. i like the ring of light idea here but i'd change it slightly. the directionals look like tracktor trailer lights. not really feeling it .. if you are gonna try to pull led off you have to start with a full clear lens ... search on the forums and youll see what im talkgin about (some of the people on here took the inside junk out)
|
Merry Christmas. Ho Ho Ho.. Put 'em on and let's see. Night shots too, But I'm not sure if I'll rock it. |
Bake off the diffusers on the inside! I want to see what it looks like without them! Night shots!!!
|
i dig em, where do ya get the leds?

I just like it with out the defuser shit
|
let me know how it goes, i want to do this to my taillights as well, your version (diffusers intact) look 100% better than the tuner car lights. As long as they're bright enough and do their job i will do this to my set.
|
How do you remove the defusers?
|
run a search .. apparently it was a complete pita

Those are some sexy LEDs :)
I woudl love LED's for lights. Imagine an Rx7 which all other lighst don't dim when you hit the brakes because of the voltage drain! |

Part of me likes the clear look, the other part of me loves the stock look.. I really can't tell which way to go. Can you put the diffusers back in if you bake them out?
|
i want this.
https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...hmentid=211323 someone point me to a thread that explains how to do this? mainly just opening up the housing. i searched couldnt find anything solid. |

Open up the casing by putting it in the oven - certain temp/time or else.... or use a heatgun then you take that clear shit inside. You then spray the tails with some tint and clear coat. Search for Modernized tails or tail lights... Good Luck and posts the results up wheter successful or not.. |
Can you put the "clear shit" back in?

Random tip: If anyone is thinking about clearcoating your taillights--wait until the weather gets warmer. ;) I ruined a set of my "modernized" tails because the clearcoat wasn't going on clear because of the temperature... It will get a creamy/glazed look. So unless you have a temp. controlled garage or a paint booth, you'll run into problems. |
I have a temp-controlled garage! w00t. :) However, a good polish is fine for now if you do need to wait until summer.
|
humidity is also a major factor in clouding clears . . .
plastic polish FTW |
Can you recommend a good plastic polish?

Meguiar's and a buff ball
