problem solved
finally tracked the sucker down. turns out the positive battery cable was faulty. crusty 15 year old cable. it was encrusted with dirt and oil from when the front eccentric shaft seal wore out. all that crawling around and sniping wires for nothing. oh well... i'm off to see what else i can screw up.
