Problem With My Vert.
ok so i have a 1990 vert.AUTOMATIC. n/a.
when i turn i let it do the normal warm up procedure. but then i start driving and in first gear it stays in it tooo long. then i start smelling something burn and i see smoke coming out my exhaust. but then after that it doesnt do it anymore. it just does it ever time i start the car and drive it. but now the car didnt even warm up today. i drove to work. didnt drive it for like 3 hours. started the car and it didnt warm up. its just went to normal idle then stalled out. i have been reading up in the archives. i read it could be the tps. but im not sure. anybody else have had this problem or know what i should doo. thanks if you can help. |
also my transmission oil seems burnt.
also it backfires like crazy. |
There is a valve on the tranny that connects to your engine via a vacume line. I forget what it's called. But, when it fails, it allows tranny fluid to be sucked into your combustion chamber causing the smoke you described. Sounds like yours is starting to fail.
Easy and relatively cheap fix at most any auto tranny shop. |
do you think that hose will fix the rest of the problems i have with it???
and thank you very much bro. |
Not a hose fix. It's replacing the vacume valve on the tranny to fix. If I'm right, replacing it should make the smoke go away and improve the tranny's shifting.
Quick check, jack up the car, follow the hose to the tranny, then just pull the hose off. If there is tranny fluid coming out of the hose, that confirms my suspicion. |
alright thanks man.
ill check that up then get back to you on it |
Did you pull the vacume hose to see if tranny fluid was in it?
|
i havent had time to do that yet.
i just want to know what else i should do to check up on the car if it isnt that hose. |
Check the hose. Takes about 5-10 minutes. I'll bet a couple of Del Taco taco's that's your problem.
|
haha ok.
can i just jack the front end of the car up and check it?? or does it have to be evenly put up off the ground? and thanks for your help man. |
Jack it up from the front. The Vacume sensor is on the passenger side of the tranny. S/b very easy to get to. May be stubborn to pull of, but be patient and work it as it it simply pulls of.
|
ok thanks man.
where do i jack it up at on the front bc i remeber somebody told me they tried doing that and they fucked up their radiator. |
Well, it usually isn't a very good idea to put the jack under the radiator. That was simply not paying attention.
If you have a typical hydrolic floor jack, you can slide it under the front until it lines up with the cross member just before the oil pan. It is the member the plastic underpan mounts at the rear. Best to put jack stands under your car as well for safety. Alternative that might work. Roll your car so the passenger wheel rolls up the curb at the edge of your driveway. If you angle your car right, that should give you enough room to crawl under the passenger side to access the valve and rubber tube. |
haha i like the second idea.
thanks man ill try that soon then get back to you. |
another problem with the vert....
everytime i turn the wheel to the right the buzzer goes off.
i though it would be the oil but the gauge says its good and also its just if i turn to the right not the left. anybody konw wtf is up? |

Vacuum Modulator
If it smokes at the exhaust all of the time, replace the Vacuum Modulator. It is small vacuum diaphram that screwes into the tranny and has a vacuum hose connected to it. It senses vacuum and determines the shift points for the tranny. If the diaphram ruptures, as they often do, tranny fluid will be sucked up by the vacuum tube, injected ino the engine, and burned. When you replace the modulator be prepared to catch tranny fluid coming out of the hole.
|
ok so i went today and checked the vacuum modulator.
i saw prices for a new one. its 70 at parks and 20 at adavance. then i jacked up the car and got underneath it and i couldnt find the hose so i got some guy from advance to help me look at it and he said that i would have to jack the car up really high. take down the exhaust and tranny and then i could change the modulator. |
Vacume Modulator=Vacume Valve in laymans words.
My advise to you at this point, go to a tranny shop and let them check it and replace it if that indeed is the problem. |
damnn it man
tranny shop=more moneyy. and i dont really like taking my cars to shops because people like to rip me off. but yeh is there an alternative? like the guy from advance said that there could be a way i could get it from the inside of my car. but i dont belive that. |
