well here is an odd model

my 89 rx-7 black on black ( vin verified) orgiionally from canada
which is an s5 car, has the s4 black electric mirrors (non areo), has the s4 style manual seat belts, 5 lug single pot, and came with some mazda steel wheels, also has day time running lights.

My car has a black rubber strip around all of the wheel wells. I've only seen this on two other FCs. Can anyone explain this to me? I don't think the previous owner put them on...

My 87 GXL had those rubber strips above the wheel wells too, also had one at the edge of the drivers door.
Had pin stripes and this huge RX7 sticker thing along the bottom of both sides.

KompressorLOgic 11-17-05 01:22 AM

that is weird ive never seen that wheel wheel stuff

Funkspectrum 11-17-05 02:20 AM

I have that wheel well rubstrip on my 87 TII

88t2romad 11-17-05 02:40 AM

I looked through Marks standard features and options. I didnt see anything about a blue tint on the sideview mirrors. Im guessing its from the factory on the "higher end" rx7's. Since my turbo has it but my base didnt.

Digi7ech 11-17-05 12:04 PM

My 88 SE had the Large Armrest cover and my 88 GTU had the smaller 1 inch thick one.

I swapped it over since the higher one is a bit softer and let's my elbow line up well with the shifter.

My 88 SE also had the stock sunroof wind deflector(which i removed and kept) and a Flat black stock TII spoiler(factory).
My 88 GTU has the aero package as well(although common for 88GTU).

STR8BALLIN - R 11-17-05 06:30 PM

Icemark will disagree

but my 88 vert' has the headlight squirters...i am positive of this fact
ive got the AE stereo system (piece o' chit)
door lock lights
Enkei lightweight spare and jack
and a whole lotta pimpness ever since I started driving it!

KompressorLOgic 11-17-05 06:35 PM

iono if anyone else has noticed this... but the "sport model" is suposed to be the lightest model with the good suspension and brakes..... however it has all the wiring for power windows in the doors, even though you cant get a sport model with power windows AT ALL.... and the the base model has no wiring at all for the window s :(

adrock3217 11-17-05 07:07 PM

I have steel T2 hood. Rare, and I wish I wasn't the "lucky"(wtf?) one to get one.

Mills 11-17-05 10:48 PM

How about lumbar support in the driver's seat?

My 85 'SE has it but my S5 vert doesn't, was it removed altogether in later cars?

Some later S5 verts were available with the tan top and tan leather interior-I've only seen pics of RHD ones though...

Those puffy mudflaps are pretty cool too.

But who in the factory kept choosing the cupholder delete option every year for crying out loud?

Alex6969 11-17-05 11:10 PM

the majority of sports cars didn't have cup holders (rx's, porsches, 240's, etc)

here's what my 86 gxl has:
2 piece shifter like 1st gens, now broken and comes out if i don't wiggle it down in there
all labels "GXL" "Mazda" and "RX-7" are decals, not badges
rear washer resivor thats impossible to fill w/o funnel
no LSD, witch is saposed to be there
came with rear storage bins (unlike some 86s)
no security, fogs, or power locks :-(

Very common aftermarket parts of that era

Tan top and Interior on verts was only available in the 92 vert models.

It is possible for a Canadian vert to have headlight washers (although I have never seen it on one- how do you get the squirters to work- push in on the cleaner switch???Like a 10thAE). One needs to remember, that until someone provides us/me with non US brochures for the FC, the only ones posted will be the US spec ones. Other countries may have other options/features.

All 88 verts came with a version of the Pioneer AE stereo system as well as the light weight spare, and P package verts came with door and ignition lock lights.

Normal S4 shifter... it is the same shifter as the S3.

Again normal.. all 86 and 87 models came with stickers instead of badges.

no LSD, witch is saposed to be there
Probably just worn out.

- ah all GXL models came with rear storage bins...

fogs were not available unless they were dealer or aftermarket installed in 86-88.

So in other words, you have a perfectly normal 86 GXL with nothing what so ever outstanding.

my friend 87's has badges (or holes and the paint discoloration for them)

and every 86 should of came with LSD as you say. I have all the records for the car since it was purchased and nothing about replacing a rear end. and wouldn't they replace it with another LSD? the previous owners knew nothing about the car to the extent of doing the swap themselves.

Why do you think every 86 had a lsd?

I cant exactly remember as it is a useless option I can say I never use but I have activated them in the past with a friend watching (and getting sprayed).
I have a feeling it may be as you described.

Someone said earlier that his didn't have power steering--mine didn't come with it either. I still have the window sticker, so I'll check to see if says it was a delete option. Just after I bought mine, Road & Track comparison-tested a TII against the Corvette and Porshe 944 Turbo. The TII offered almost the same performance at half the price, yet R&T dissed it because they didn't like the TII's power steering. They just didn't know how to order a car!

carlrx788 11-18-05 09:14 AM

My 87 TII was build late on 1986, I also have the window sticker and last night I was checking it. My car was not equiped with P/S, the sticker says "rack & pinion steering", it has LSD and it also has the aluminum hood, blue velour interior, cassette player with graphic equilizer, P/W, power sunroof, security system, pretty much like other TII. This is my 8th RX-7 and my first TII and I like it very much.
Men, I like the idea that back in 87 the RX-7 was up to compete to cars like Vettes and Porsches, Cool!!

Not unless it was a 87.5 or later did it have badges. Go look at the production date... you'll find it to be the 2nd half or later production.

No I have said and continue to say that all the Turbos had a LSD and all the GXL's had a LSD in 86 through 88. You probably have it, and it is worn out.
http://www.mazdamark.com/FC86Ad.jpg see the bottom of this late 1985-early 1986 ad...

Anyway a worn out clutch type LSD is not uncommon in areas with lots of rain or ice/snow or that the car has over 100K miles on it. If you have the Monroney (window sticker) there should be a notation somewhere that says the model such as RX-7 GX 2P or something like that in the model description body of the sheet (found in the upper left of this Monrony):

my 86 sport is normal
my 87 sport had a tII spoiler
my 88 gtu was normal

slpin 11-18-05 10:18 AM

weird combo?
it came with an automatic

Man I just don't know how many times I have to post this:

On all US spec S4 Turbos (except the 10thAE) Power steering was an OPTION

This is found in the standard features and options sticky thread at the top of this section.
