please help anyone!!

my 1986 non turbo starts for about 4 seconds and dies...i tried to look for anything related to that in the search and nothing....anyone have any idea to what it could be?? please help me..thanks

Rotorific 10-23-02 11:38 PM

could be a vaccum leak afm number of things really try to explain more

apreludem 10-23-02 11:43 PM

ok...first the car wouldn start at all..if would just crank and the motor would move..so i read up on flooding..took the spark plugs out..put some atf and got a new battery...finally the damn things starts and ofcourse smokes a lot..(white smoke) but after like 5-7 seconds it dies...even if i press on the gass pedal while is fired up...i tried it like three times and it did the same thing....starts and then dies...my dad said it could be the injectors...so i took em off..two of them did look dirty...

dr.jones63 10-23-02 11:45 PM

Check the plug that plugs into your BAC valve, replace the spark plugs. Check for vacum leaks

EX-HONDA 10-23-02 11:46 PM

white smoke is probably coolant, not good, was it blue at all? maybe just too rich or you burn up the access fuel from it flooding

apreludem 10-23-02 11:53 PM

im going to replace the spark plugs....and where is the BAC thing at?? also..what do you think i should do about the injectors? i found a company that would clean them..they are called RC racing injectors...should i send the injectors to them??

Mobius 10-24-02 02:07 AM

I don't know about sending them unless the tips are cracked to shit. Other wise fuel injector cleaner should do it. I have RC engineering injectors currently in my fc

it sounds like you could have an afm problem. Test that first. Also if your alternator is acting up, it will affect the afm. One way you might be able to tell is to listen to the air box when someone steps on the gas....there's this weak odd sucking sound when the afm isn't opening right. If its the AFm itself, you'll need special tools for that.....but if the car is runnng and you turn on the lights and it dies right away, its the alternator.

good luck.

EX honda

When you put atf fluid in your housings and start it up.....White smoke out the ass!

Rotorific 10-24-02 02:50 AM

yeah i doubt it would be the bac you can unplug it and it still starts the bac plug is what makes your engine rev to 3k.... well that and runs your bac if you have it i dont...I thinkits your afm make sure the plug is tight...

apreludem 10-24-02 01:20 PM

ok thanks everyone for the help...and i still have another question...whats the AFM?? im new at this..so try to keep the laughter and pointing to a minimum... :D

apreludem 10-24-02 06:14 PM

by the way.....how would i go about cleaning the injectors...just dip the entire thing in injector cleaning fluid? and what type of fluid would work best?? should i run a 12v current through them to see if they click and work?? once again..thanks everyone

J-Rat 10-24-02 09:39 PM

The AFM is the Air Flow Meter. That in my opinion, could be your problem...

Here is how it works....

When you turn your key to start, you activate the fuel pump. When you return the key to "run" if the AFM isnt sending a signal to the fuel pump saying its pulling air, then the fuel pump will shut back off.

Hence the reason your car only runs for about 5-7 secs... Make sure your WHOLE intake system is intact, from the AFM to the Throttle body.

The AFM is the box located under your air filter (assuming you have a stock filter box)

thanks a lot j-rat....im going to clean the injectors...(carburator choke cleaner works right?) and im going to check the afm...by the way..how do i check the afm?? should i just buy a new one...and how much do they cost...

thanks again man..

J-Rat 10-25-02 01:23 AM

I really dont think that the AFM is bad, and if it is, I have another one I would sell you cheap. New they are $400.00.

Like I said, check EVERYTHING! Check the connector to the AFM. Make sure the big black tube that runs from the AFM to the Throttle Body is installed and NOT leaking.

There should be a link arond here somewhere that tells how to test it, I dont have that comitted to memory.

*edit* I just thought of something. You can Jumper your fuel pump connector (yellow 2 prong connector, right side of car, by air filter). This will run the pump ANYTIME the key is on. If your car runs with that jumpered, you may have another problem. ( think that works..I may go test the theory later.... I am speaking theoretically here...)

thanks a lot j-rat...im going to check everything...and clean my injectors my self...u have any ideas on how to clean the injectors..should i just dip the entire injector in the fluid...or just spray it on there should work fine? if you have a pic of how the afm should look like (the correct way it should be hooked up) please post it..thanks again

J-Rat 10-25-02 04:58 PM

This is the way I cleaned my injectors:

1. C-Clamped them to a bucket.
2. Ran some fuel line to them.
3. Sprayed Carb cleaner into them while I manually opened them with an old car battery (2 wires running from the injector)

I can give you more detail if you like, but the point is to hardwire one line to the battery(neg or pos, doesnt matter), and tap the other one on the other post. Dont hold it there long, or it could burn out the injector.

I will get pics later, I got to go to work...

thanks a lot man...yeah pics will help...also..i checked the afm..the hoes and the electrical connector seem tight and secure...but now that i remember...i actually didnt have the intake hooked up to the car when i started the vehicle...could that have done it?

ABSOLUTELY! That is precisely what happened... You have to have the ENTIRE intake together in order for the vehicle to run..

im an idiot for wasting your time man..hahaha...i didnt know....had a damn honda for toooo long....ok...let me re-cap this so that i make sure i have everything ok to go..

you have to have everything (intake) connected...for the car to actually run?? i had it so that i could see the butterflyes exposed...i cleaned my injectors with some carb. choke cleaner...now if you could go into detail (pictures if you can) as to how i can clean the injectors by connecting the fuel line and stuff...thanks again man..

J-Rat 10-26-02 03:08 AM

You arent wasting my time man... This is a lesson I learned from this site. The ENTIRE intake system has to be hooked up in order for the car to run...

As far as pics for cleaning injectors, I am gonna have to hit you with that tomorrow...I am too drunk to do it right now...

apreludem 10-26-02 04:57 PM

HAHAHHA..man..i wish i was drunk...well thanks man...

apreludem 10-27-02 06:31 PM
