Please help
Ive been looking to buy this RX7 , but it has no engine. I'm not sure as to weather it was a turbo engine before, but it has the turbo hood and duel exaust if that matters. I have always been a bmw fan. I have heard many good things about the power of a turbo rotary.... ANYWAY this car is in good shape body wise so was looking at a jdm 13b 1.3 turbo engine with top mount intercooler so first of all are these companys gonna sell me a decent engine? i don't know the best route for buying this car for $200 with no engine, do i buy one of these jdm engines and get it built up one day for a bigger turbo or do i buy a non-turbo and get it built up one day for a supercharger? And i guess i don't need to ask if 200.00 is a good deal for an rx7 shell. Thank you....
200 is a good deal for a shell if its in decent shape. getting a jdm engine from an importer is a gamble. some are junk and have been sitting for 10 years, some are fine. maybe try and find a blown engine somewhere local for cheap and send it to someone to have it rebuilt.
^ yep dont trust the jdm label..get u.s spec 13bt blown engine get it rebuilt..then you can see for yourself how a rx7 turbo feels. beemers are good too though. nice smooth inline 6 but still two different cars size and shape.
Look at the VIN. JM1FC331 = non-turbo. JM1FC332 = turbo.
With limited rotary engine knowledge you should just buy a fully rebuilt engine from a reputable shop rather than take chances on something you know little about. Other than that, it is all about time and money, so that needs to be up to you. It is also a good idea to decide the purpose of the car prior to doing any work.
Were I in your situation, I would either keep everything stock and simply have fun driving the car as-is, or if I wanted more performance I would have a professional install and tune a standalone EMS on a tweaked engine and then work on upgrading the remainder of the car. This applies to either a turbo or non-turbo engine.
A supercharger isn't such a great idea on an RX-7. The kits aren't so great, and the rotary engine is better off with a turbo in almost all cases.
Shells normally sell for about $50. However, it does not sound like you are looking at a "shell".
