Planning to go Koyo and an E-fan.. Would like some suggestions
 

I'm going to be drilling by coolant neck this week so I can put in a sender for my water temp gauge and it got me thinking that since I am going to be working down there I might as well get a koyo rad , some samco hoses and a nice e-fan with maybe an aluminum rad panel to finish out the equation.

So my question is which e-fan would be the best in my situation? I've heard everyone raving over the new Black Magic Extreme and the shroud covering the whole rad is a good thing in my book. I've heard others mention vintage air but I'm not sure what I should look at ?

I dont need anything too crazy but I'd rather spend the money on it now and never have to fuck with it again. As of now my setup is pretty basic but I will be going FMIC in a week or two and probably a streetport and a gt35rs over this winter so like I said I'd rather spend the money now and not have to redo shit later.

Lastly , lets say I go Black Magic Extreme , I think it pulls somewhere around 20 amps will my stock 70 amp s4 alt handle that ? I have like 5 gauges in the car , a safc and a wideband with probably a decent headunit and a nice set of speakers in the very near future. I am planning to upgrade to atleast an s5 alt if I go farther like amps/subs. But ofcourse if this is going to be pushing it then I can get an s5 alternator now. Oh and I have an Optima Yellowtop in there now if it makes any difference.

I would upgrade to an FD alt before going efan. Find teh efan that pulls the most CFM too. The Black Magic Extreme(180sx) pulls 3300 CFM. Theres another monster fan that pulls 3700 cfm but I forget the name of it.

Care to remind me what exactly I need in order to upgrade to the FD alt? Dont I need a bracket or something or whats that thing rated at?

You need to swap pullies if you get the FD alt, since the 13B-REW uses a serpentine belt drive.

that isnt hard at all.. impact gun it off, or go to the local kragenish store, or auto repair shop free.

e-fan go to the junk yard and get a fiero fan. they fit our rads almost perfectly, do a seach for fiero and you will find pics that i posted.

I'm using a fiero e-fan + s4 alt and its working fine,.. I dont have anything that pulls major amperage besides the fan however.

I had a black magic 2800cfm fan on another RX-7. 13 amps. It worked well but my alternator was already failing so I had to carry around a jump box. I rarely used the jump box but I still needed it. Didn't pull as much air as the stock fan. And the fan thermostat only went down to ~200F.

I'm in the same boat as the thread starter. I have a koyo, and i need do determine what type of fan to use. I'm starting to consider just using the stock shroud and fan though. I'm not that big of a fan with the fiero fans, for a friend of mine ran one for a few years and couldn't figure out what the temps wouldn't stay under 200F. As soon as he threw the stock fan back on, it was almost too cool (170F).

We'll see i guess.

that's what i did to with my koyo and e-fan. a shroud is the best way to install with an e-fan. i used to have my fan right up against the radiator. not the best way but it worked. a shroud is much better as it will pull air from the entire core instead of a 16" circle (size of fan by the way). i bought my fan off of ebay. its a zirgo and pulls ~3300cfm.

i fabbed the shroud up myself, but you can also have your shroud custom made. there is a guy on ebay. look up "custom radiator shroud" a buddy of mine with a 2JZ went through him and it looks just as good as mine. still havent found the "optimal depth" for the shroud though. maybe some one can help both of us with that. hope that helps

I've searched through some threads and it appears the Black Magic Extreme will cover the entire surface of the Koyo to a point that you actually have to make a little incision for one of the coolant pipes. The problem now is getting a nice alternator to support it.

well the FD alt seems to be the popular vote. you dont really NEED it, but i guess it helps.
