Piecing an engine back together...

Just purchased an '88 Vert, and part of the engine is missing, but how much of it is missing Im not sure. Im trying to see if I can this use link to the craigslist ad, to show the picture from in the engine bay. It's the bottom right picture. It's looks like at least the upper intake manifold, but anything else that anybody might notice?

wow damn.. looks like a perfect candidate for a carb conversion.

looks to need uim parts, + some vacuum hoses, and injectors... erm.. check fsm for a blow up version of the uim. i think they should have it. it will show u a lot more than what we can tell you.

while its there you can always remove ratsnest crap.

The EGR valve looks new. Maybe the guy took the upper intake off thinking this was going to fix a problem with the motor. Just something to think about. Maybe it wasn't able to pass emissions or maybe it was having idle problems. You are missing the upper intake manifold, dynamic chamber, throttle body, and intake duct to throttle body adapter, intake duct, coolant hose, and vacuum hose. I also see missing fuel hoses and a missing pulsation damper. That can be replaced with a $10.39 banjo bolt from summit (12mm × 1.25 banjo bolt).

I'd say if you want a good diagram, go find another RX-7 and have a look at it. You will see all the sensors and locations and such. Also, there are some extra items on the throttle body that you need to pay attention to. Thermowax, BAC, TPS, and cabling.

Best of luck! I'd love to see the after pictures when you have it running again. :)

Not sure what all your missing but I know I have it all if you want to buy it. Been trying to sell it all for a year now. Let me know.

Hmm, well when I checked the carfax too, it said that the last time that inspection was attempted it did not pass as well. I do have some parts left over from the past part out. But as far as exact detail, I dont know the terms of all the parts yet. What does a pulsation damper look like? Here's a shot of the UIM that I still have in the garage:

What does a dynamic chamber look like?

It's the part that has "13B Injection...Mazda" embossed on it.

one320fc 09-20-07 06:44 PM

That part that is in between the Intake and TB is the dynamic chamber

WhiteRabbit 09-20-07 06:46 PM

very cool, got that since I have the whole UIM. At least I think I do. Gotta double check and see if I still have the TB. Thanks fellas.

one320fc 09-20-07 06:51 PM

There is a TB bolted to that intake in the picture you posted

WhiteRabbit 09-20-07 06:54 PM

GD you're right! Ok, so I gotta ask was there a difference in intake at all on a vert as opposed to a coupe? The coupe I parted out earlier this year had a different setup?

gtu'd 09-20-07 06:55 PM

The Pulsation Damper is on the end of the fuel rail right below the intake manifold...

It should have a yellowed cap on it.

one320fc 09-20-07 07:00 PM

they are the same as long as they were both S4 non-turbo

WhiteRabbit 09-20-07 10:47 PM

They are definitely both S4 non-turbo. Am I missing a fuel rail? I just sat my UIM back on there but didnt hook anything together yet.

Jesus, am I on crack or everybody's blind...?

In the pics. from the car missing the upper intake, dyn. chamber etc. look at the area around the primary fuel rail? Can you say FIRE? As in pulsation damper fucked up and caused a fire. Would explain the new parts and newish looking hoses, etc.

White rabbit - you're missing your seconday injectors and rail. the little vac hose behind the thermostat cover cap should go to your FPR (fuel pressure regulator). Fuel hoses attach to bottom of FPR and at the back to the fuel hose from the primary rail. Use new rubbers around the injectors. The rest of the stuff you probably know...i.e. intake snorkel, AFM, etc.

WhiteRabbit 09-21-07 01:36 PM

Crap. That was the furthest from my mind man. Thanks again! What's the probability of internal damage from that sort of fire?

pfsantos 09-21-07 01:41 PM

Only if it got stupid hot and screwed the oil or water o-rings. Try a compression test for a better idea...not sure if it's a guarantee though. Doesn't look like crazy damage, though, so think positive.

WhiteRabbit 09-21-07 01:50 PM

Definitely! So I dont need both fuel rails?

Spectator 09-21-07 01:57 PM

Yes you do.

I'm pretty sure that an FSM would tell exactly what you are missing. :)

Look in PfSantos's sig, hes got it linked there.

pfsantos 09-21-07 02:21 PM

Other than the huge vacuum leak (which would be enough of a problem in itself), you wouldn't be feeding the beast enough fuel at the good RPM's. Oh, and you wouldn't want those fuel lines open to atmosphere, also. :)

DaveB 09-21-07 02:57 PM

I was thinking fire too. The whole area around the pulsation dampner looks rather sooty to me.

WhiteRabbit 09-21-07 04:07 PM

I cant view my own pics here at work. You mean where the pulsation damper is supposed to be?

pfsantos 09-24-07 07:29 AM

Yes, exactly. All around the pulsation damper and primary fuel rail.
