No, in a 88 only a 86-88 CD player will work. The 89+ use a different plug set up.

dang you are smart! is there any way to transfer plugs, just by cutting wires, and using the different plug kindof as an adapter?

Nope, different signal.

But the 89-91 CD was built into the head unit... it was not a standalone unit that could be used with the standalone tuner and tape of the 86-88.

So you could replace the entire radio/Tape/CD with a 89-91 unit if you went and bought the plugs to do it (Metra makes the car side plugs for the 89+, you would just have to custom build an adapter to make them work and wire past any factory amps)... but the 89-91 units were pretty crappy even back then... well alone 18 years later.

You would be better off buying the $150 CD player special at Best Buy or CC than putting in an old OEM POS CD. You'd get a better player.

Yeah its not worth it i tried to get one to work in my car just cause i thought it would look better than an aftermarket but it was way to much hassle for half the features and performance
