Odometer rollbacks

Does anyone know if you can check whether the odometer has been rolled back on an FC? I'm looking to buy one and the CarFax report reported an inconsistency in the mileage.

basically you gotta looks for scratches and figerprints and stuff.

how big is the error, is it something where it could have been transposed? or the three is really an 8?

very very easy to just replace the instrument cluster with a lower milege reading odomenter out of another 7. I'm very very very careful when I look at buying fcs. if you are good you will be able to tell if the milege is right.

It does look pretty suspicious. As of now the odometer reads 97k.

I bought a 7 from a small dealership cheap. Turns out that the DMV told me the records didnt match up when I went to get the title and tags done. The dealership apparently had set the mileage back.....records showed that it changed while in their possession. When I confronted them about it, they said that since the car is exempt from the state's mileage requirements(over 10 yrs old) that it didnt matter. However, the federal law is still in effect....long story short, I only ended up paying $300 for it, they cancelled the rest of the debt, and I now own a running rx7 haha

I would be careful about it--whenever ANY odometer replacement is done, there is supposed to be a record of it on the door jamb of the car. they should put a sticker there.

ied say its probly more like 110,000miles if the reading is wrong, if someones turns one back a long way your gona know by the condition of the car unless its mine.

If the discrepancy occurred between 1997-1999, the issue is really academic now. Someone(s) has owned the car since then; how well has it been maintained during that time? As skydivr implied, it is beyond most states requirements for mileage reporting.

You don't want to get taken, but the condition of the car NOW is the real issue.

Of course, when YOU go to sell it, a concerned buyer might run a carfax and be scared off...
