no more water in the FTPs ..bake the bitch

well i was putting on my s5 bumper today . i was trying to make everything look good.. BUT you know those lovely FTPs. well i drilled a 1/8th inch hole in the bottom.
I also drilled the rubber nipple hole.... then preheated the oven to 200 degrees... SAY WAAAAAAAAAAAH? thats right the oven im known for my unorthodoxed methods.. in everything i do. put the mofo in the oven at 200 degrees in a frying pan on the top shelf with the FTP sitting upright like they do in the car..... then check it at 5 minutes by rattling the pan making sure your oven isnt off on temp (more than 200 and its slowly melting your lense). then let the mofo sit for 15 minutes. if it fogs when you take it out that means there is still water in there 15 minutes should be enough for all the water to come out.. i kept putting it in and pulling it out at 5 minutes to see if the water was leaving thats how i came up with 15minutes. seal the holes(when colD) put in on your car and be happy. WARNING : i didnt have shit to do with you burning your shit ..chuckle i said 200 NOT 350.450 .. or self clean

Wankel7 12-25-04 07:11 PM

Huh, one would think that Self Clean would be better?

hahaha

therotaryrocket 12-25-04 08:01 PM

what is a FTP (stupid I know!)?

gxlbiscuit 12-25-04 08:26 PM

the clear lenses in the front of the bumper are called Flash To Pass lenses(FTP) no prob i once though WOT was warm operating temperature ...no comment

RotaryEvolution 12-25-04 08:34 PM

the microwave is a much better choice, ever dried your underwear in one?

me neither. :D

therotaryrocket 12-25-04 10:10 PM

why don't you just take them out? Is there anyway possible to make the passenger side one a scoop for the intake?

RotaryEvolution 12-25-04 10:22 PM

problem with pulling out the FTPS is the headlight sits right behind it, you would need to remove the lamp also to get enugh airflow through there. i saw a guy today who had his FTPS out, it looked like shit anyhow...

gxlbiscuit 12-25-04 10:42 PM

as the president of the hateration nation that is pet peeve number 14,170 taking out the FTP for cold air... gotta keep those sealed beams nice and cool when they are turned off.. no matter who you are i always tell people to put them back in "Nice car, but where are your FTPs you need FTPs you should get some in there." makes the car looke like the bumper is on upside down,, or riced out.. or missing something. .. or a piece mobile ... when i bought my car it didnt have them the following day i drove 175 miles to my parts car just to get my lenses.. (had to get my circle tails too)

RotaryEvolution 12-25-04 10:46 PM

i almost waved at the guy but then i decided not to, i was driving my truck but i just hate it when people make good FCs look bad..

rs_1101 12-26-04 12:20 AM

man nothen reminds me of the holidayz more than the smell of a fresh baked FTP. mmmmmmmmmm-mm-mmm

introVert 12-26-04 01:37 AM

beefhole 12-26-04 10:09 AM

I ripped my FTPs apart and just cleaned then that way. Now if they fill with water I just pop them open and dry them.

gxlbiscuit 12-26-04 11:53 AM

even worse than that is see honda's around here riding aroudn with one headlight assembly removed for cold air. i have also seen guys with 2nd gen integras (the square bodys with huge healdight assemblies) cut out the innermost lights and put a vent to make it look like 92 prelude. How are these guys allowed on the street.

Node 12-26-04 05:59 PM

how about the 1000hp supras and skylines that do that. what ricers.

what about people who cut their bumpers to get more air for their intercooler? a few of my friends have cut their bumpers like that, one had a half bridged turbo 2, and the other has a jumbo streetport t70 turbo ii putting out 450rwhp on low booost........damn ricers

just because they made their car look not 100% stock to try and add some cold air is no reason to hate so much just because you dont like it. especially when its for function

NorCal90 12-26-04 06:06 PM

Do the aforementioned Supras and Skylines really need to remove their headlights to get 1000 hp tho? I mean I'm sure there is a less ugly way to get that cold air but hey, maybe I'm wrong.

Node 12-26-04 06:23 PM

at the drag strips, yeah. Thats the best way to get cold air, but you'll probably never see one of those supras running around on the streets like that. Its more of a temporary thing, just using that as an example

gxlbiscuit 12-26-04 06:43 PM

for those cars its ok its a double standard.. a cut bumper on a seven with some HP, its fine but come on a stock n/a really really really needs its FTPs out.. the president has spoken

rs_1101 12-27-04 01:22 AM

just so youre aware.. when i was doing headlights, we would do this same trick before resealing the box. while its still hot. also if youre really hardcore, you can find a way to hide a packet of silica gel in there.

Node 12-27-04 01:49 AM

thats a good idea, the silica gel.

wozzoom 12-27-04 08:48 AM

I have a couple of comments on the above BAKING PROCEDURE...

#1) Drill the hole in the TOP of the FTP, not the bottom, that way you can't see the hole when you put it back together. Also, water tends to collect at the bottom of the FTP socket...one less hole is one less chance for a leak.

#2) There is no need to use the oven. A hair dryer works great and there is less of a fire hazzard. Same rules apply: When you remove the heat and it fogs up again, you're not done.

#3) Replace the silicone around the lens!!! If you want this job to last, remove the old silicone and put a new seal around it. Also seal the hole that you drilled. This is how water got in there in the first place.

#4) Buffing the lens with a high speed buffer will remove oxidation and that ugly yellow color. If your clear coat is peeling, remove it completely and respray with a can.

I did this about 5-6 years ago and they still look great. No fogging.

Please keep this thread on-topic. If you wish to discuss mods to other cars, there's a General Automotive forum in which you can do it.

Thanks.

gxlbiscuit 12-27-04 05:16 PM

im a single dude i dont have a hair dryer.. i was looking for one but couldnt borrow one. so i said holy cow the dorms (im in the military) have an oveni have two holes in the lights one in the top. one in the bottom. with a hair drier im not sitting there to hold it.. with a yellow lense.. eeeeeelbow grease:-P as for the silicon i thought about it. then i said if there is a next time i will worry about it. to each his own just sharing what i learned.
